In a bid to cut expenses, Ford has decided to reduce its offerings in the US market to just the Mustang and the Focus Active crossover in the passenger car segment. The Focus Active crossover will make its debut next year. The company will instead focus only on high-profit models like trucks and SUVs.
The move comes as Ford aims to reduce US$ 25.5 billion in operating costs by 2022 and increase profits. Models like the Taurus, Fiesta, Fusion, C-Max, and Focus sedans will be discontinued in a few years. Ford CEO, Jim Hackett has announced that going forward, the company will be focusing only on pick-up trucks, SUVs or commercial vehicles.
Ford is targeting an 8 per cent increase in revenue by 2020 by cost reduction and better cost management. To achieve this, the car maker is considering exiting certain markets as well as discontinuing some products. Ford's marketing and sales division is likely to see a large portion of cost reduction.
To compensate for the reduction in the number of products, Ford will launch five new SUVs in the American market in the next two years. These include the 2019 Ranger pick-up. Ford expects that in 2020, over 90% of vehicles it sells will be trucks, SUVs or commercial vehicles.
