Dieselgate: VW Group could recall over 3 lakh cars in India

With several developments on the Volkswagen emissions scandal being reported in international markets, there has been a fair amount of ambiguity pertaining to the situation in India. After initial reports suggested that around 1 lakh cars could be affected by the scandal, it has now emerged that VW India may recall as many as 3 lakh cars in India.

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) recently investigated some of VW's diesel models in India and found "significant variations" between the laboratory test figures and the actual on-road emission levels. The affected cars are said to include all cars powered by the EA189 diesel engine family, blanketing cars sold by the Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi brands.

VW recently revealed a fix for the emission test defeat device used in the EA189 diesel engines in Europe. The fix involved software changes for the 2.0L TDI (similar changes expected for the 1.2 TDI), while the 1.6L TDI will require hardware updates as well. If found guilty of violating the Indian emission norms, Volkswagen may issue a recall for updates of a similar nature.
