Delhi bans BS3 and BS4 vehicles as AQI hits "severe" levels

Air quality in Delhi worsened for the fourth day, with smog engulfing the capital and surrounding regions. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 406, placing it in the ‘severe’ category.

With air pollution hitting hazardous levels, the government has implemented the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-III), effective November 15.

Under GRAP-III, all BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles have been prohibited from plying on the streets. Violators could face a fine of Rs 20,000 under Section 194(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

The government is also taking other measures to curb pollution and reduce dust. These include increasing the frequency of road sweeping, sprinkling water on roads and banning construction and demolition activities.
