Carlos Ghosn released on US$ 9 million bail

According to a media report, former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn has been granted bail by the Tokyo District Court. The bail amount is set at US$ 9 million and the release comes almost four months after his first arrest.

In November 2018, Ghosn was arrested over financial misconduct. He was kept in custody and was re-arrested on new charges a month later. In January, his bail request was denied, despite offering to submit his 3 passports, wearing an electronic monitoring device and hiring guards to monitor him. This time, Ghosn’s attorney offered new ways to monitor including camera surveillance and suggested that the case could have been dealt with as an internal company matter.

Ghosn hired Junichiro Hironaka as his attorney recently. He is reportedly famous for winning acquittals in Japan which is said to have a conviction rate of 99%. Hironaka is a critic of the Japanese legal system.
