BMW M EVs could get a simulated gearbox & vibration feedback

BMW's boss recently also stated that the carmaker could make the next-generation M3 & M4 models fully electric

BMW's performance division, M, is currently developing its first electric model. Ahead of its arrival, BMW boss Frank van Meel stated that the brand is looking at different ways in which the performance EV could communicate with the driver.

Current petrol-powered cars have the sound and feel of the engine, placement of the gears and the rev indicator, which communicates a lot of information without the driver having to focus on the car's instruments. However, with EVs, there is no way to get that information without looking at the speedometer. The car also misses out on the transmission jolts, which is a tell-tale sign.

Reports state that BMW will debut the technology on its M EV, which could be revealed sometime before the end of this decade.

BMW's boss recently also stated that the carmaker could make the next-generation M3 & M4 models fully electric, with a reveal sometime in 2027 or 2028.

Apart from the German brand, other carmakers are also working on ways to make EVs more exciting to drive. Hyundai offers its latest performance car, the Ioniq 5 N with the N e-shift - which simulates the brand's 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, alongside its N Active Sound+. Similarly, Toyota is also working on a clutch-operated manual transmission for its EVs.
