Best insurance policy for my 14-year old Maruti Suzuki Esteem

I'm confused as to whether I should go for a comprehensive policy renewal or third party insurance to save upon some moolah.

BHPian Piyush19 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

The car in question for this thread is a Maruti Suzuki Esteem Vxi (2007). This is the only car we own, and we've been loving her to core till date. With a sense of confidence, I can proudly say that the Esteem can give many cars of the same segment a run for their money, even today!

But due to 15 year car life in Delhi NCT (thanks to the NGT), she's in the penultimate year of registration in Delhi, and her registration will expire in June 2022. The insurance renewal of the car is due on 26 June every year, and for this year's renewal, I'm confused as to whether I should go for a comprehensive policy renewal or third party insurance to save upon some moolah (the lockdowns haven't helped).

I'd love to hear out from BHPians of their experiences and advices on the same.

Here's what GTO had to say on the matter:

I would still say you should go for comprehensive insurance only. Reason being, it won't be that much more expensive. On such cheap old cars, it is the pricey 3rd-party insurance pricing that stings, not the comprehensive. I am anyway a personality who always goes for the max coverage anyone will offer me, be it comprehensive insurance, zero-dep policies, extended warranties etc. so I will always recommend comprehensive till as long as you get it.

No one offers comprehensive insurance anymore for my old Jeep.

Here's what BHPian supremeBaleno had to say on the matter:

What is the NCB on the insurance? If no accidents, it should be having 50% NCB. In which case, you can get an NCB certificate from your insurer, which can be applied against your next car purchase, saving a lot in first year insurance. I guess getting the certificate automatically makes your car a 3rd party insured car, which is ok given the last year of its life.

BTW, what happens next year on registration expiry? Car is scrapped? Sold to someone outside Delhi?

Here's what BHPian hridaygandhi had to say on the matter:

What is the difference in premium? I don't think it would be a lot because the comprehensive insurance on my 10-year old Jazz was sub-5k.

A cursory search at Policy Bazaar for a 2007 Esteem showed a difference of less than 1k between third-party and comprehensive plans. Small price to pay for that little peace of mind.
