All-new BMW X2 unveiled

BMW has unveiled the production-spec X2 crossover, which is set to debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Motor Show.

The new BMW X2 is based on the UKL2 platform which also underpins the new X1 and Mini Countryman. The styling of this car is based on the X2 Concept which was displayed at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. While it features distinct styling, the most notable design element is the redesigned twin-kidney grille. On the X2, the grille has been flipped vertically so that it’s narrower on the top and wider at the bottom. The twin-pod LED headlights flank the upside-down grille with circular fog lamps placed just underneath. The X2 measures 4,360 mm in length, 1,821 mm in width and 1,526 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,670 mm and a 470-litre boot.

The X2's side profile makes it look more like a raised hatchback than a coupe-SUV. This is because the car has shorter overhangs and a lower height compared to the X1, while both cars get an identical wheelbase. It also gets BMW logos on the C-pillars. Some variants get grey trim around the flared wheel arches and along the sills. At the rear, the X2 gets a steeply raked rear windshield with a spoiler on top. The tail lights feature L-shaped LED strips.

While the X2 has a unique exterior design, the interior of the car looks pretty familiar. A 6.5-inch infotainment screen is standard across the range with a similarly sized touchscreen and an 8.8-inch touchscreen available as an option. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay but does not support Android Auto. It comes with Wi-Fi hotspot preparation but a full head-up display is available as an optional extra.

The new BMW X2 will initially be offered with a choice of a petrol engine and two diesel units. The front-wheel drive sDrive20i uses a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine which produces 228 BHP and 450 Nm. The all-wheel drive xDrive20d comes with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that makes 188 BHP and 400 Nm and the xDrive25d has 228 BHP and 450 Nm of torque. The petrol engine is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the diesels come equipped with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. According to BMW, more engines will be added at a later date. Also, the X2 will be available in M Sport and M Sport X trims that have a lower ride height compared to the standard X2 and ride on larger wheels.

The BMW X2 is likely to come to India in the near future. That said, there has been no official confirmation about its launch date.
