2022 BMW i4 & i4 M50 electric sedan globally unveiled

BMW has globally unveiled the i4 and i4 M50 electric sedan ahead of their launch later this year.

BMW has unveiled their new i4 and i4 M50 electric sports sedans for the global markets. The new BMW i4 is the brand's first fully-electric sedan, with the i4 M50 being the performance-oriented version of the same.

The new BMW i4 carries forward a similar design as its fuel-powered M4 sibling. This includes the large kidney grille upfront, which now comes finished with a glossy black panel, which houses the front sensors and radar technology. The front grille can also be seen with blue highlights all around. Flanking the grille are a set of slim LED headlamps, with BMW's Laserlight offered as optional.

The side profile of the i4 is slightly larger than the standard 4 Series Coupe to accommodate the extra pair of doors. The new BMW i4 also features a sloping roofline and a set of stylish 19-inch alloy wheels (20-inch alloys offered as optional). The rear profile is mainly characterised by the LED tail lights. It also features blue highlights on the rear bumper.

Moving inside, the new BMW i4 comes with a completely new dashboard. It features a huge curved display, integrating the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with the new 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

The infotainment system comes powered by BMW's latest iDrive 8 software. It is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and also features over-the-air updates.

The BMW electric sedan will be offered in two versions - the i4 eDrive 40 and the i4 M50. The electric powertrain on the entry-level version produces 340 BHP and 430 Nm. The i4 is said to have a range of 590 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle) and is said to be capable of sprinting from 0 - 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The more powerful i4 M50 variant will come with a dual electric motor setup, churning out 544 BHP and 795 Nm. The M50 variant is said to have a top speed of 225 km/h while accelerating from 0 - 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The BMW i4 M50 will have a range of 510 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle).

Both variants, however, will come with a similar charging system. The electric sedan is said to feature fast-charging technology, capable of replenishing up to 80% of the batteries within 30 mins. It will also come with a standard 11 kW AC charger, which will charge the sedan overnight.

BMW has announced that the i4 and i4 M50 electric sedans will go on sale in international markets from November 2021.
