2019 Range Rover Sentinel armoured SUV unveiled

Range Rover has unveiled the latest version of the Sentinel - the armoured version of the Range Rover Autobiography. It has a fully-certified protection cell designed and built by the company's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO).

From the outside, changes to the SUV are minimal. The Sentinel is now offered with a Black Pack, emergency lighting pack, siren and a PA system for occupants to address people outside the vehicle. It gets armoured glass all round, certified to European Standard VPAM BRV 2009 VR8 and PAS 300. The passenger protection cell meets the VPAM BRV 2009 VR8, PAS 300 and ERV 2010 standards. It also comes equipped with roof and under-floor blast-protection. Land Rover claims that the body can withstand modern and unconventional forms of attack like improvised explosive device (IED). Further, the Sentinel is certified against STANAG 4569, which offers protection against a powerful mine positioned beside the vehicle and from behind the front wheel.

In case of an emergency, the occupants can exit the SUV from the armoured escape panel that is located in the rear luggage compartment. It will work even if the other doors are unusable. The Sentinel also gets run-flat tyres. The chassis, suspension and braking systems have also been upgraded to accommodate additional security features.

The Range Rover Sentinel is powered by a 5.0-litre supercharged petrol V8 engine that puts out 375 BHP, an increase of 39 BHP compared to the outgoing model. The company claims a 0-100 km/h time of 10.4 seconds and a top speed limited to 193 km/h. It also gets a 4-wheel drive system. The Sentinel comes with more than 1 ton of armour plate and glass.
