Stellantis hints at selling off the Maserati brand

Maserati's lineup is expected to remain unchanged till 2027

According to media reports, the Italian luxury car brand Maserati, currently owned by the Stellantis Group, could be sold off. The report follows company CEO Carlos Tavares' recent announcement that the conglomerate was considering killing off car brands which aren't making any money.

Maserati is an iconic Modena-based brand but has been suffering in sales over the past year. The car brand recently registered a 50% decline in global sales, with just 6,500 units between January to June 2024. In comparison, sales figures stood at 15,300 units during the same period last year.

Natalie Knight, CFO of Stellantis, stated, "The first half has been disappointing. The future is about how we maintain best value. There could be some point in the future when we look at what’s the best home for [Maserati]."

The CFO also stated that one of the main reasons for the brand's decline is the discontinuation of its key models like the Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante. The company currently sells just the new GranTurismo and Grecale, along with the MC20 supercar. What's worse is that Maserati's lineup is expected to remain unchanged till 2027, until the pure-electric replacement to the Levante arrives. The brand is also working on an electric successor to the Quattroporte, but even this has been pushed to 2028.

Modern car interiors sans touchscreen would look like an old Boeing 747

Though he isn't a "big fan" of touchscreens, he does believe them to be the right answer in today's vehicles.

Touchscreens aren't the most popular thing in cars, with many carmakers even bringing back physical buttons and switches to control various features. However, with the increasing number of features on offer, touchscreens do help consolidate their controls while simplifying the dashboard and the cabin.

Klaus Busse, Global Head of Design, Maserati, recently shared his thoughts on touchscreens in modern cars. He stated, "We use screens because there are so many features in a car that if I were to put a button for everything, the cabin would look like an old 747." Further adding, "The idea is to organize things in a screen that only presents to the driver what they need at that moment."

Busse went on to mention that though he isn't a "big fan" of touchscreens, he does believe them to be the right answer in today's vehicles. He mentioned how screen placement & the information displayed must reinforce the brand's driving enjoyment while minimising distractions. When asked whether his perfect interior would have a screen, Busse said, "Yes, you know, when I say I’m not a big fan [of screens] it doesn’t mean I would do something different with the interiors. I think [the screen] is the right answer."

Busse mentioned, "But where do we put the screen? Maserati puts it in a position that if you have your hands on the steering wheel, you can let your hand fall on the screen."

He added, "I don’t want the driver to move their shoulder out of the seat to reach for the screen and lose the perfect driving position. It’s not up here [atop the dash] where it is in most other cars because I don’t want the screen to visually distract the driver. As a species, we react to movement. The last thing I want [as a designer] is movement in your peripheral view to distract you from what you’re supposed to enjoy, which is the Maserati driving experience. From a distraction point of view and ease point of view, that’s why we move screens down low."

Maserati to stop production of V8s by year-end

The Italian car brand is working on introducing an electric version of all its models by the end of 2025, under the Folgore name.

Maserati has confirmed that it will stop production of its V8 engine by the end of this year. Although, there will be a few V8-powered models on sale in 2024, based on the inventory or a few customer vehicles awaiting delivery.

To celebrate the end of the V8s, whose history dates back to 1959 with the brand's 5000GT Coupe - Maserati will introduce two special edition models. This includes the Ghibli 334 Ultima & the Levante V8 Ultima. Both cars will be unveiled at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed in July and will be powered by the same 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8, producing 572 BHP. The cars though, will get a number of cosmetic changes in terms of colours & trims, along with a few handling tweaks.

With the discontinuation of the V8, Maserati will be focussing on its new twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 engine, which already powers its Grecale Trofeo and MC20. The smaller V6 though, produces a higher power output than the outgoing V8 with 620 BHP.

Having said that, Maserati has also announced it will be going all-electric by 2030. The Italian car brand is working on introducing an electric version of all its models by the end of 2025, under the Folgore name.
