The G-Class is one of the icons of Mercedes-Benz's history and is still going strong to this day. The boxy stance and distinct character are loved by enthusiasts the world over, and it is still a hot seller for the brand. There have also been limited production run variants like the Maybach G650 Landaulet, 4x4 Squared, and 6x6. These have all sold out in a short period.
Mercedes is now working on a smaller and more affordable version of the G-Class. It will be part of the manufacturer’s biggest product launch offensive, which was announced recently. In a new teaser, the g (written in lowercase) appears to be covered up at the bottom of the G-Class pyramid. Mercedes had also shown a design sketch of a ‘little G’ in September 2023 at the IAA Munich show. During the event, CEO Ola Källenius called it the "son or daughter of the iconic Big G."
Mercedes has not revealed much about the little G-Class and it remains to be seen how much it will share with its bigger sibling. It will be interesting to see if it comes with a body-on-frame layout or a monocoque. But there is no doubt that it will excel in off-roading. Size-wise, it could be similar to the Suzuki Jimny and could come in three and five-door versions.
Two years ago, the German business paper Handelsblatt reported that the little G-Class would share mechanical similarities with the next-gen CLA that will break cover shortly. If this is true, the baby G could get a plug-in hybrid with a 1.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine. An EV version can also be expected.
Considering how popular the G-Class is in India, especially with G63, this 'little g' will surely be a hit with buyers here.
Other models lined up as part of the three-pointed star’s product offensive include electric versions of the GLC, C-Class and E-Class. The S-Class is also getting a major refresh for 2026.

Speaking at a roundtable interview, Michael Schiebe, Head of AMG, G-Class & Maybach business units at Mercedes-Benz, claimed that the majority of the G-Class SUVs built since its introduction in 1979 are still roadworthy.
Schiebe stated, "80 per cent of the G-Classes that were ever produced are still in the market." Further adding, "The cars have a very long lifetime."
Mercedes-Benz reported in 2023 that they built 5,00,000 units of the G-wagon, which means there are still 4,00,000 of them on the roads today.
Schiebe added, "So here you can calculate [that while] maybe a G-Class needs a little bit more material than [your average] compact car, the durability, if you see the lifetime of a G-Wagen from 1979, I think you [will have had to have driven] driven many, many compact cars, in some cases, to keep up the lifetime of a G-Wagen."
With the recent arrival of the all-electric G-Class, the G580 with EQ technology, Mercedes now offers the G-wagon in three powertrain options - the popular bi-turbo V8 for the AMG version, a six-cylinder unit on the entry-level G550 and the all-electric G580.
Schiebe stated, "We try to be a customer-centric company. We want to deliver what customers want. And if they demand V8 engines, then it is our job to supply very efficient and very powerful V8 engines."
He further added, "We have customers that really love the V8. And they will love the V8 in the G-Class forever. They can go and continue with the G63. Then we open up [availability] for customers who want to have a very efficient high-performance combustion engine powertrain, the six-cylinder G550. It’s more efficient, it’s more dynamic than its predecessor V8, this is the right car for them. And then you have the electric one for those who like the shape, look, and feel of the G-Wagen, but say 'nowadays I don’t want to drive a combustion-engine G-Class anymore."

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed a new G-Class variant called "Little G". The German carmaker has released the first official teaser, which outlines the upcoming model.
As seen from the teaser, the new "little G" seems to carry forward the old-school boxy design of the current G-Class. It is also expected to feature the traditional boot-mounted spare wheel.
The teaser was released during the unveiling of the new Mercedes CLA Class Concept by company CEO Ola Kallenius. The Mercedes boss stated that the little G will "take the character of the big & brash G-Class and condense it down into a more compact package."
Apart from the teaser though, no other details have been released about the "little G". Having said that, reports do suggest that the new model will be positioned below the G-Wagon, will come standard with four-wheel-drive, undercut the current G-Class pricing and maybe even offer a pure electric version with the tech borrowed from the upcoming EQG.
The upcoming Little G from Mercedes is said to take on the likes of the Jeep Wrangler and the lower-spec versions of the Defender.

Mercedes-Benz is expected to showcase the concept version of its electric G-Class - the EQG, at IAA Munich, scheduled to be held in September. According to a media report, the EQG will not be a new development, but a conversion of the current G-Class to a pure-electric SUV.
Reports suggest that the Mercedes-Benz EQG could come with multiple performance variants, with varying battery sizes. However, the EQG will come standard with dual electric motors and Mercedes' 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. It is also said to carry forward the same off-roading capabilities as the current ICE-powered G-Class SUV.
While the specifications of the electric powertrain are yet to be officially revealed, reports suggest that the electric G-Class could come with a 108 kWh battery pack, offering a range of around 500 km on a single charge. The range-topping variant could also offer power figures of around 500 BHP.
Reports also state that the final production version of the Mercedes-Benz EQG could go on sale in international markets sometime in 2022 or 2023.
