Volkswagen claims no defeat device used in India

In tests conducted by The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), differences were found between the laboratory test figures and the actual on-road emission levels of Volkswagen diesel car models. However, the German carmaker has issued a statement denying any use of a defeat device in its vehicles in India as it had done in the US, Europe and other markets.

While Volkswagen has recalled about 3,23,700 cars sold under the Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi brands in the country, it claims to have taken this step only to update its EA 189 diesel engines. While the 2.0-litre units will get a software update, the 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre engines will get flow transformers. A measure for the 1.2-litre engines will be annouced shortly.

Additionally, the company claims that none of the cars tested violate the BS-IV emission norms.
