According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), Vehicle Retail sales fell by 54.79% in May 2021 compared to April 2021. Similarly, sales of all categories of vehicles fell by a huge degree with two-wheelers falling by 53%, three-wheelers by 76%, passenger vehicles (PV) by 59%, tractors by 57% and commercial vehicles (CV) by 66%, respectively.
Overall sales for the month of May 2021 stood at 5,35,855 units, compared to 11,85,374 units in April 2021. Since India was under complete lockdown in May 2020, a YoY comparison cannot be represented. However, compared to May 2019, when 18,22,566 units were sold, total vehicle retails have fallen by 71%.
This fall in sales is largely due to the lockdown imposed in various states during the month due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Apart from urban markets, this time, even rural areas were badly hit.
The tractor segment registered a de-growth of 56.60% in May 2021. 16,616 units were sold as opposed to 38,285 in April 2021.
Two-wheeler sales decreased by 52.52% to 4,10,757 units from 8,65,134 units in the previous month.
Three-wheeler sales were down by 75.90%. 5,215 units were sold compared to 21,636 units in April 2021.
Passenger vehicle sales declined by 58.96% compared to the previous month. 85,733 units were sold compared to 2,08,883 units in April 2021.
