Toyota Fortuner could get 2.5-litre diesel engine

Back in 2012, there were rumours that Toyota would give the Fortuner a 2.5-litre, diesel engine. However, Toyota ruled out any such development saying that it did not find it feasible. Now, according to a report by Autocar India, the company is gearing up to launch the Fortuner with a 2.5-litre engine later this year.

Currently, the Fortuner comes with a 3.0-litre, 168 bhp diesel engine in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. While the former is available with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, the latter comes with a manual transmission only.

The 2.5-litre unit that Toyota intends to plonk in the Fortuner is said to produce 142 bhp. In the base variant, it will come with a manual gearbox and in two-wheel drive configuration. Toyota is expected to price it at Rs. 20.82 lakh.

The company is also planning to introduce new top-of-the-line variant with the current 3.0-litre engine, four-wheel drive and automatic transmission. It is expected to be priced at Rs. 24 lakh.
