Skoda plans to manufacture electric cars in India

By the end of this decade, 30% of Skoda and Volkswagen's local portfolio would comprise of EVs.

Skoda plans to manufacture electric cars in India. However, the company is looking to bring in its first EV, the Enyaq, via the CBU route, prior to committing to local manufacturing.

According to Thomas Schaefer, CEO, Skoda Auto, India will be a key market for green vehicles. By the end of this decade, 30% of Skoda and Volkswagen's local portfolio would comprise of EVs. To achieve this, the company would have to focus on localization of parts and that would include setting up cell factories.

He added that the government should allow companies to test the market with global products and that can only be possible if import duties are reduced. Schaefer believes that EVs shouldn't be penalized until they are localized in India.

At present, Tata Motors is at the forefront of the EV race in India. The Nexon EV has been its best-selling model. MG, Hyundai and Mahindra also have plans to launch more affordable EVs in the future.
