Rumour: Next-gen VW Polo-based convertible SUV in the works

A set of patent images has recently leaked on the internet, pointing towards Volkswagen's plans to introduce a convertible SUV based on the next-generation Polo. The German automaker is already said to be working on a compact crossover/SUV based on the upcoming hatchback, which has repeatedly been spotted testing under heavy camouflage. However, with the convertible SUV, Volkswagen appears to be targeting the niche drop-top compact SUV segment.

The model seen in the patent images looks similar to the Volkswagen T-Cross Breeze concept that was showcased at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. It gets an upright nose, sharp headlamps, a wide air dam and squared foglamp housings. Black plastic cladding runs along the SUV's lower body panels, while the front and rear bumpers get skid plates. The side profile showcases the SUV's two-door layout and foldable soft-top. Wraparound taillights are expected to get LED treatment, while the rear foglamps embedded in the bumper also get squared housings.

The interiors are an amalgamation of various design cues from different Volkswagen models. The fully-digital instrument cluster is similar to the one offered with the B9 Passat, while the steering wheel has been borrowed from the Golf R Touch Concept. The button-less dashboard is similar to that of the T-Cross Breeze concept.

If Volkswagen indeed brings the Polo-based convertible SUV into production, it will likely be powered by the same set of engines that will feature in the new-gen Polo.
