Rumour: Next-Gen VW Passat to launch in India in January 2017

The 2017 Volkswagen Passat has already been spotted in India during its pre-launch tests. Interestingly, the test mules have been driving around public roads without any camouflage. Latest media reports now suggest that the company will be launching the new-gen model in January next year.

Volkswagen showed its intent to bring the eighth-gen Passat in India after it was showcased at this year's Auto Expo in Greater Noida. The model was internationally revealed back in 2014. The earlier-gen Passat in India was discontinued around the same time.

Earlier spy shots showed a 2.0 TDI badge on the car, pointing towards Volkswagen's plans to carry forward the existing 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TDI diesel engine from its predecessor. New reports suggest that a 1.8-litre TSI petrol engine will also be on offer, which is essentially the same unit that is found under the hood of the Skoda Octavia and Superb. A plug-in hybrid variant, called Passat GTE, might also be introduced in the future.
