Rumour: JLR to build an all electric car in Austria

Jaguar Land Rover recently launched the XE sedan in international markets and revealed the name of its first SUV - the F-Pace. The Tata Motors subsidiary is now reportedly planning to build an all-electric vehicle in Austria.

According to the report by the Sunday Times, JLR has plans for a small production line in Austria, to make about 10,000 cars a year by leasing space in an existing factory. Multiple automotive brands are entering the race to build EVs and hybrid vehicles, as ever constricting emission norms and penalties have made manufacturers go greener with their portfolio.

JLR's rival BMW has seen a positive response to the i3 and i8 with the latter launched in our sub-continent as well. Apart from the benefit of adding an electric vehicle to its portfolio, any technology developed with the car could be used to help the rest of JLR's range see improved efficiency figures. Reports suggest that the car in question could be revealed as early as 2016. Europe will most likely be the first market where the EV will be launched.
