NGT bans registration of new diesel cars in Delhi

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued an order banning the registration of new diesel cars in Delhi. It has also directed the Government of India and the state government not to purchase any diesel vehicles.

Apart from prohibiting the registration of new diesel cars, the tribunal has also banned the re-registration of diesel vehicles over 10 years of age.

The order has been passed after the Supreme Court stated that it was considering a ban on diesel cars in Delhi and prohibit trucks from passing through the city to curb the rising pollution in the city.

A report by the World Health Organisation revealed that New Delhi is the most polluted city in the world.

The NGT has also said that the odd-even formula that the state government plans to implement from January 1, 2016, could lead people to keep two cars instead of just one. It has asked the centre to have a multi-pronged approach to solve the problem of rising pollution.
