Next-generation Honda Civic to go turbo

Small engines with forced induction are gaining popularity among global automakers. The Japanese have often been lauded for their ability to extract great performance from small sized engines and a report now states that the Honda Civic will soon feature a turbo-charged petrol engine.

The smaller engine will help Honda cope with increasingly stringent emission norms, while making the car more efficient as well. The Honda Civic is currently offered with a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 140 BHP and 170 Nm of torque. It is also offered with a 1.6-litre diesel - depending on the market. Honda will begin producing the new engine at its plant in Anna, Ohio and the turbo engines will be produced in 2015 itself.

In India, Honda discontinued the Civic (Gen 8) towards the end of its life-cycle and never brought in the next generation. It is still uncertain if Honda plans to bring the Civic name back to India. However, if the Japanese car maker does follow through with a launch, the new turbo-petrol would be an ideal engine option.
