My new Tata Curvv EV: What I think of the it post initial 1200 kms

Sports mode is for the giggles! Feels like how you would in a roller-coaster, pulls like a train, butterflies in stomach!

BHPian anurag.somani recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Hi Everyone,

We got the Curvv.Ev (Empowered + S, 55 Kwh) home on 2nd Nov; 1200 kms so far with a mix of city and highway; has been an amazing experience!

Dealership Experience:

  • Heritage Motors, Thane (Panch Pakhadi Branch)
  • Extremely professional and courteous.
  • The time between booking & delivery was 20 days, we were kept updated on the status including allotment, shipping and registration.
  • There was no untoward push for insurance (got on our own as a company leased vehicle), accessories etc. We picked the 7D mats from Tata genuine accessories at time of delivery.
  • Great delivery experience with the puja arranged by them, nice-touch!

Look and feel:

Exteriors - Enough said! Trivia: We were stopped yesterday for checking twice while driving back from Lonavala (Maharashtra is in election mode, increased vigilance). On both occasions the policemen got into jolly good conversations on the looks, range, charging experience etc! Feels like evangalizing the Ev sceptics to take the plunge!

  • The wine-red interiors in the empowered + S are Classy!
  • Elephant in room - Backseat comfort: good for 2 adults, 1 child! Rear space is simlar to our Ecosport.
  • Optimal highway configuration is 4 people with the backseat handrest down to keep you comfy over longer trips.
  • Dad is 5"10' and headroom was fine over a 300 km single day drive - so for most practical cases, space is good!
  • Under thing support could be better though in rear (common complaint for all ev irrespective of brand).
  • 6 ft or taller? Reserve the front seat or look elsewhere!
  • Boot: Canvernous.
  • Audio / Screen quality: Fantastic!

Most useful & under-rated features:

  • Paddle shifters for regen mode - I've hardly used brakes except in emergency. Got a bump 10 m ahead, paddle shift up to regen 2 and then back to 1 after the bumper - makes single pedal drive a breeze!
  • 360° camera brilliantly integrated - park / reverse / indicators etc. will bring it the right view on screen. Zero blind spots, period!
  • Auto hold: brake slightly on a signal and the car.goes on auto hold - no need to keep the brake engaged.

Range & Charging:

410 - 430 km across 4 charging cycles so far (mix of city and highway). Have charged at 7.5 kwh as well as 60 kwh - been a breeze. Charging infra in and around Mumbai for fast charging is sorted. 7.5 kwh; not so much - have it installed at home pl (thankfully all variants come with the 7.5 kwh charger by default)

I usually think about charging only once range goes below 100, so worry free range for me is 300+ km.

Drive and Powertrain:

  • Sports mode is for the giggles! Feels like how you would in a roller-coaster, pulls like a train, butterflies in stomach!
  • City mode with regen 1/2 - comfortable, predictable, enough power for both city and highway. Just needs a mild tap to hit 100 and above.
  • Eco mode - haven't tried; with that range, needn't worry about economy!
  • The chassis is firm on highways, comfortable on city roads. The 17" on Empowered + S make the ride more absorbant. I've thrown it around the ghats and some of the steep climbs towards Tiger point confidently - well controlled body roll and comfy in backseat too.
  • The tyre does squeal though on hard breaking, maybe the low resistance doing their bit - will have yo wait till monsoon to see how it holds up on wet roads.

Niggles & Complaints:

Niggles - None so far, touchwood! The wiper sensitivity for one of the rain showers was a bit erratic, should be taken care in first service.

Complaints/Omissions:

  • Window up/down buttons should have been illuminated
  • No sensor on the passenger side door
  • The keyfob needs to be really close for the sensor to work
  • Utility spaces should have been more - sunvisor / cubby holes for the keys / a mirror light for the passenger / seat cover inserts for those bills and menu cards - right now all of it goes in the door pockets.

Curvv Ev 55 or Nexon Ev 45:

While Nexon ev 45 is absolutely VFM, why I preferred over Nexon (apart from the spec sheet differences and looks)

  • A ~70 km extra range means I need to think about charging after 300 km (vs ~230 for Nexon)
  • Activ Ev platform, especially the chassis - throwing it across the twisties is so much fun!
  • We keep the cars for long (this replaces our Ford Figo after 12 yrs) - Curvv will feel spl a bit longer!

Some pics on delivery day to wrap up!
