Last week, Renault unveiled the Kwid hatchback, its upcoming entry level offering. The company plans to position it against the Maruti Suzuki Alto and Hyundai Eon.

The Kwid is the first Renault-Nissan Alliance model to use the company's Common Module Family - Affordable (CMF-A) platform. It has an SUVish look and comes with a honeycomb mesh grille and black plastic claddings giving it a rugged look. The interiors of the Kwid get a 3-spoke steering wheel, digital instrumentation and a multimedia/navigation system with a 7-inch touchscreen.

Here are some more details about the car.

  • 57 BHP power output from the 0.8 liter petrol engine.
  • Renault is going all out with the mileage figures. Expect a tall ARAI rating.
  • Expected to have low gearing. Someone who has driven it says that the 57 BHP petrol doesn't feel sluggish.
  • Renault is working on optimizing the performance of the automatic variant. When launched, it will come with a rotary shifter. Click here to see the location of the AT shifter.
  • A year after launch, a diesel & bigger petrol *might* follow.
  • Interiors were designed by an Indian!
