Kolkatta: Ferrari crash leaves one dead and one injured

A Ferrari California T crashed into the edge of a flyover in Kolkata, which led to the car impaling itself on a metal rod of the guard rail. The driver of the car was killed while the co-passenger has been admitted to the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) with serious injuries.

The California T was part of a 7-car group that was heading back to the city on Sunday morning after a drive with family and friends. The cars belonged to the members of Club GT (Kolkata's Super Car Club) who were on their usual Sunday drive. The driver of the car was 43-year old Shibaji Roy and accompanying him was 17-year old Aashna, whose father was driving another car in the group. The other cars included a Mercedes Benz SLC 43 AMG, a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Ferrari 488 Spider, a BMW i8, a Porsche Boxster and a Volkswagen Polo GTI.

As per preliminary reports, a truck in front of the Ferrari slowed and moved to the right. This caused the car driver to take evasive actions and move further to the right, hitting the parapet of the flyover. A metal rod impaled the car and pinned down the driver. The rear rollover protection bars of the car were also deployed as the car detected a potential roll over situation. According to eyewitnesses, rescue vehicles didn't come with the proper extraction tools. With help from the cops, the other drivers and locals used a nearby crane to free the trapped driver. However, Mr. Roy passed away while waiting for proper equipment.

It is also reported that the car was doing around 120 km/h. The registration number of the truck was not noted and there will be a search for the truck using footage from nearby CCTV cameras.
