India could get luminous (glow-in-the-dark) highways

India could get luminous highways in the years to come. These roads do not require street lights. The have a photoluminescent coating which creates lines, which come to light on their own. These lines are get charged by sunlight.

These highways cost 15-20% more than regular highways and are already in use in other countries. In India, they are likely to be used in hilly arears, which have many unlit sections.

Since these roads do not require street lights, they could help save energy. A government study reveals that the energy consumption on public lighting will be 13.2 TWh by 2020. This is twice as much as the power consumed in 2010. Street lights are on for more than 4,000 hours per year.

Authorities believe that the roads will also work well in foggy conditions as drivers will be guided by lines, which in turn will increase road safety. Rumble strips could be added along the lanes to warn drivers.
