Hyundai Ioniq details revealed; rivals the Toyota Prius

Hyundai has revealed key details and images of the Ioniq - a car built on a chassis that has been specifically developed to carry three low-to-no emission powertrains. The "three-in-one" Ioniq will be offered as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a pure electric car.

53% of the car is made of high-strength steel that has been combined with aluminium to provide a lightweight, but strong structure. Non-structural parts like the bonnet, tailgate and suspension components have been made from aluminium, resulting in weight savings of around 12.6 kg vs conventional steel.

Powering the Ioniq Hybrid is a 1.6L Kappa GDi engine (with a thermal efficiency of 40%) that makes 104 BHP and 147 Nm of torque, combined with a magnetic electric motor that generates 43 BHP and 170 Nm of torque. The Ioniq features a lithium ion polymer battery that has been placed low to give the car a low centre of gravity for better handling. Stability and handling are also aided by a dual lower arm multi-link rear suspension. Channelling the grunt to the wheels is a hybrid-exclusive 6-speed DCT gearbox.

An interior image shows the car with a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, a central armrest, automatic climate control, a touchscreen infotainment system and the push button start / stop feature. Highlighting the car's hybrid heart is some blue outlining around the AC vents, instrument cluster, infotainment system's display and seat upholstery.

The Ioniq is expected to make its public debut at the Geneva motor show in March this year.
