Honda to revive the S2000?

Honda was the reason behind a lot of smiles when it brought the NSX back to life, albeit in an entirely different avatar. If a recent report is to be believed, it looks like the revival of legendary names won't stop there and the S2000 may be brought back to life to take on the likes of the Fiat 124 Spider and Mazda MX-5.

According to the report by Autocar UK, representatives from Honda’s advanced engineering department attended a recent S2000 owners’ club event in the British Isles in order to get their inputs and feedback. It is yet to be seen if we can expect an official statement from the company or a statement from a Honda official, but the prospect will certainly get a lot lips smacking in anticipation. From the SSM (sports study model) concept in 1995, to the introduction of the production spec S2000 in 1999 to 2009 when the model was laid to rest in its 2nd iteration, the S2000 attracted a legion of enthusiasts who loved the simple and straightforward front engine - rear drive with a manual gearbox package. The cherry on top was the engine that could rev to 9,000 rpm.

If the report by Autocar is to be believed, Honda will try to retain the S2000's core values, and may offer the third generation S2000 with a front engine - rear drive configuration. A 6-speed manual box can be expected, but an automatic will most likely be offered as well to cater to the US market, which was a major contributor to the original S2000's sales. The engines could include 1.5L and 2.0L turbocharged, 4-cylinder units.
