The Government of Gujarat has announced that small private vehicles will be exempted from paying toll while passing through toll roads across the state from August 15, 2016. All toll booths including those on national highways are expected to be affected by this ruling.
Gujarat has nearly 31 state highways with a total length of 19,761 km. The 12 national highways in the state cover 4,032 km. According to the government, there are around 50 toll booths in the state. With the exemption given to private vehicles, the government estimates a loss in revenue between Rs. 80 crore and Rs. 100 crore per year. With national highways also being covered under the plan, the yearly loss is expected to touch Rs. 250 crore per annum.
Taxis and all other commercial vehicles will continue to pay toll tax.
It may be recalled that in 2015, the neighbouring state of Maharashtra stopped collecting toll from private vehicles at many toll plazas as well (click here to read report).
