Drove from Mangalore to Thalassery: Route taken & road condition

Kannur bypass is again progressing at a slow pace and hence one has to put up with the city traffic.

Drove down to Thalassery from Mangalore recently. Here are some updates.

• Mangalore-Talapady: Smooth 4 lane highway. No hiccups other than the occasional clown on his two wheeler coming the wrong way.
• Talapady-Chengala: 6-laning work is nearing completion and it's smooth sailing for the most part. Beware of two way traffic in certain stretches though.
• Chengala-Nileshwar: Haphazard construction everywhere. Nowhere is the work 100% complete except the railway flyover near Cheruvathur. Water stagnation when it rains at several places.
• Nileshwar-Kannur: Took the Payyanur-Payangadi route since the bypass work is crawling at a snail's pace.
• Kannur-Thalassery: Kannur bypass is again progressing at a slow pace and hence one has to put up with the city traffic. Took the diversion just before entering the Thalassery bypass to reach Thalassery town.

If you're driving down this highway, be extremely careful at Chengala where one needs to take a sharp left below the under construction flyover to head towards Chattanchal. There are no signboards signalling the diversion and I proceeded straight on the Vitla road for a few kilometers before checking Google Maps and realizing the blunder.
