Tata ordered to refund Rs 16.95 lakh after Nexon EV catches fire

The HV battery pack of the Nexon EV was replaced once after the owner started experiencing issues.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Hyderabad has ordered Tata Motors to refund Rs 16.95 lakh plus 6% interest to the owner of a Nexon EV, which recently caught fire.

The complainant, Jonathan Brainard, had purchased the Nexon EV for Rs 16.95 lakh. It is said that he started experiencing issues with the HV battery pack shortly after taking delivery.

While Tata did replace the battery pack, on June 1 of the following year, Brainard heard a loud explosion while driving. He lost control of the car, which then caught fire and crashed into a motorist.

After reviewing the evidence submitted by the owner and having heard the statements of the Fire officials, the Commission found that the fire originated from the front of the vehicle and noted that Tata Motors was at fault for delivering a vehicle with a manufacturing defect that caused the fire and burn injuries to a motorist.

The Commission ordered Tata Motors and three other parties to jointly pay Rs 19.45 lakh, including Rs 2.5 lakh as compensation to the injured motorist.
