Govt. plans to test all diesel cars for emission violations

Recently, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) conducted tests on some Volkswagen diesel car models and found differences between the laboratory test figures and the actual on-road emission levels.

The Government of India is now planning to turn its attention to other manufacturers. It plans to conduct tests on diesel cars from every manufacturer to check for irregularities and use of defeat devices. These tests are expected to be conducted over the next six months.

The Volkswagen Group has had to recall close to 3.24 lakh vehicles in India. Of these, approximately 198,500 cars from Volkswagen, 88,700 cars from Skoda and 36,500 cars from Audi. They are powered by 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines.

Volkswagen is not the first company to be involved in an emission scandal in India. Back in 2013, the Chevrolet Tavera was found to be polluting more than the prescribed level and as a result, General Motors had to recall 1.14 lakh units of the MPV.
