Chevrolet unveils mid-engined Corvette Stingray

Chevrolet has unveiled the 2020 Corvette Stingray, which is the first mid-engined Corvette. The company claims that the front-engined sports car reached the limits of its performance, resulting in a shift to a mid-engined layout.

The 2020 Corvette measures 4,630 mm in length, 1,934 mm in width and 1,234 mm in height. The wheelbase is 2,722 mm. At the front, the car comes with a sculpted bonnet with projector headlamps on either side. The headlamp cluster also houses inverted V-shaped DRLs. On the side, the car comes with an air intake with a black trim and it rides on 5-spoke alloy wheels. At the rear, the new Corvette gets a rear wing, L-shaped LED taillights and quad square exhaust tips. The engine cover has a 3.2 mm thick glass panel.

On the inside, the sports car gets leather interior with metal trims and slim air-conditioning vents. The two-spoke steering wheel has a flat bottom and a flat top. The equipment list consists of a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless charging, heated steering, driver and passenger seat memory, 10-speaker Bose audio system, voice recognition and real-time traffic updates. Chevrolet claims that the front storage compartment can store a carry-on bag and a laptop bag.

The mid-engined Corvette is powered by a 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine producing 488 BHP @ 6,450 rpm and 637 Nm @ 5,150 rpm. It is paired to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Six driving modes include Weather, Tour, Sport, Track, MyMode and Z mode. The car is equipped with eBoost brakes, Michelin all-season performance tyres, electronic limited-slip differential, Magnetic Ride Control, Performance Traction Management and launch control. It also has a front suspension lift system that increases ground clearance by 40 mm. It can work up to 39 km/h and can work automatically in conjunction with the GPS system.

With the C8 Corvette Stingray, Chevrolet offers 12 exterior colours, six interior colour themes, six seat belt colours, two stitch packages, and three seat options.

The car will start at less than US$ 60,000 and will be produced at GM's Bowling Green Assembly plant. For the first time, Chevrolet will also offer the new Corvette in right-hand drive.
