BMW rolls out 40,000th car from Chennai factory

German luxury carmaker, BMW has rolled the 40,000th car from its manufacturing facility in Chennai. Car no. 40,000 is a white BMW 5-Series sedan. The plant, which was inaugurated in 2007 has an annual manufacturing capacity of 11,000 units on double shift basis. Assembling cars at the plant enables BMW to price them competitively since locally assembled cars attract lower rates of duties and taxes compared to cars imported as completely built units.

The list of cars built at the Chennai facility include the 1-Series hatchback, 3-Series sedan, 3-Series Gran Turismo, BMW 5-Series sedan, 7-Series sedan, X1 crossover, X3 SUV, X5 SUV and the Mini Countryman.
