Best Cars For Around 60k

Hi Guys,

The Issue:

Parking for our Office is usually on the Road Side. Dings and Scratches are quite common. Its depressing to see your well cared car with a bad scratch when you come to pick it up in the evening after work.
Current Cars: SX4 and a lovely SS80 DX. The latter I wouldn't even consider taking out in the rain, forget about parking it on the road.
I would consider using my Bullet if not it was my Bad Back and the erratic rains we have in Kerala.(Days as a Biker almost over).

Requirements:
Cheap: Around 50-60k,(Including basic refurbishment)
Reliable:Shouldn't break down. If it does shoud be easy/cheap to fix
Effective A/C is a Must.

Cars I have Come Across:

1) 2000 Matiz- 70000 Kms- Price 55000Rs (Good)
2) 1996 M800 DX - 45000Kms Price 60000Rs (Excellent)
3) 1994 Zen- ???? Kms -65000RS (Very Shabby car)
4) 1995 Esteem 85000 Kms 60000Rs. (Superb car, Well cared)
5) 2001 Palio 1.2EL 90000Kms 70,000 Rs (A/C not working)

Though the only sedan in the group, inclined towards getting the esteem.

Need Your Advice Guys!

I would look at option no.2 (800DX) and option no.4 (Esteem). Both are good cars, one is a small wonder and the other one is a fun to drive car. Haven't checked out the effectiveness of 800's A/c, Esteem A/c is quite good. Both are light on the pocket and easy to maintain. Whichever You choose, try to get the price down by around 5000/- to 6000/-. All the best, Keep updating the thread .

Option 2 and 4 are best, however both have weak AC's.

so option 2&4 gets max votes.

As said earlier more inclined to the esteem. Asking rate is 70k But I am sure it is negotiable to about 60k.(Market rate here). Need to spend about 5K on body polish touch up and all oil's fluids needs to be changed. Apart from that the car is great to drive. Its got New Clutch, Front Tires. Neat Interiors, Decent Sterio.

A/C seems great. cools instantly. May be Because of the Monsoon factor.

@ Suresh: From the pictures, the exteriors seems to be good except for few dents, but that's ok for a 15 year old car. Interiors look good. Go for it Friend .

Take the Esteem if parking is not a problem for you at home/office. It looks to be in good condition for its age.

I too think that the Esteem is the one to go for. From the pics it looks clean. I think you should negotiate the price to 50k. That's the price of a 95 model Esteem in Kerala. If you can increase your budget to around 80-85K, you may be able to find a 97/98 model Esteem VXI which will offer you the convinience of power steering.

Sureshji go ahead with the Esteem. It doesn't needs any introduction and if in good mechanical condition the car is a rocket for the price. But do check wear and tear of rexine on the dash as well as door pads. Car of this age most probably have this problem.
Rates can vary from 50k to 80k depending on condition and mileage.

Its the Esteem...Almost

@Sankar Parking space is not an issue but I need a car that I can feel at peace leaving on the road side. At home I have just about enough space to accommodate the esteem.

@anand: I have seen 4 esteems in the 50-60 price range in the last couple of months. The rest were in such a bad shape that I even dropped the idea of esteem as an alternative.
But this car totally changed my mind. The car is a gem to drive. MASS helped me with getting the history of the vehicle. All service records with the Dealer.

The only other car I was really impressed was the M80096DX. Again immaculate condition with MASS history. Price fixed at 60k.

So It is 96 M800 v/s 95 Esteem.

1)Both Cost the Same 60K.
2)Mechanically both are sound.
3)The 800 body appears better than the Esteem. Esteem needs touch-up+polish.
4)The A/c is not that Effective in M800.
5)Value: Esteem used to Sell for twice the price of a 800DX in 1996.
6)Service/Reliability: Both are Maruti .
7)ICE
Esteem:Old Gen Pioneer Cassette Player with a 12 CD changer(Must have been the in-thing those days).
M800:You would have to sing your fav tune yourself.

I am not comparing power, safety,comfort...etc

I am almost convinced on the Esteem.
As Anand suggested I would surely bargain for the price.

But I don't think it would go below 60k.

Thats a valuable input. Will look at that too.

Dear All,
Final negotiations will happen today. If every thing goes well then I would but it today itself.
