A-Pillars are too thick! Help in finding a beginner-friendly car with good visibility

I am currently driving Renault Kiger CVT. I am looking for another car for my wife. Kiger though ticks off all the needs, it has poor visibility because of its thick A and B pillars. Sometimes the A pillars are great at hiding even two wheelers if not very attentive. That makes me scared to hand over Kiger to my wife as she is a new driver. None of the car review websites cover the visibility part for all the cars. Can someone suggest a good beginner friendly car with great visibility and automatic transmission within 10 lakhs budget? I am okay with used cars as well. Thanks

re: A-Pillars are too thick! Help in finding a beginner-friendly car with good visibility

Good point, I was quite surprised at the A pillar thickness of the Nexon recently and I have heard that some other cars have it worse. I also felt its a combination of the location of the A pillar in respect to the driver seat, driver height and the position of the RVMs.
So shorter drivers who end up in a position where their field of view is blocked by the large triangle of a thick A pillar and window mounted large RVMs can easily miss a small car even at close quarters.
So cars with door mounted RVMs will block less as there is a gap between the A pillar and the RVMs.
But this can only make things slightly better or worse but can't replace the basic design which keeps the A-pillar away from the driver's field of view under normal driving.

As for the car you'll have to specify your requirements but I am listing some entry level cars for a check if it works for you :
- Ignis
- i10 Nios
- Tiago

MG Comet would be a great choice.
Under 10 lacs you would only get AMTs which are not very smooth. Also, most of the other modern cars have poor visibility with 'high set' dashboards where it is difficult to judge the corners of the bonnet.

I would suggest Ford Figo automatic. The A pillar is not bothersome like other cars I feel. Also you could find good ones for ₹4-5 lakh price.

These are for MT only.
If automatic is a non-negotiable then I would suggest to go for proper automatics within 10-15% of your range like :
- i20 Sportz IVT
- Amaze S CVT
- Altroz XMA Plus DCA : should be the last option considering that its a DCA and issues already mentioned on the forum.

You'll have to check for the A-pillar situation with your wife at the wheel of each car.
If you're looking at AMTs I have heard that Hyundai and Maruti AMTs are the better of the lot but not trouble free.

Re: A-Pillars are too thick! Help in finding a beginner-friendly car with good visibility

Last week we bought Swift VXI Ags for my wife, visibility from driver seat was a major deciding factor, stylish black interiors, compact diemsions and cute looks makes it a good city car, driver seat height adjustment also available for vxi.

I drive brezza which sits high still I found Swift front view good. We also checked out Baleno and fronx but dash line was quite high, combined with that old crt type TV screen, front visibility was poor. Even wagon r dashline is high even though it's a tall boy design.
Spresso and new celerio have good visibility but of lower budget.

Re: A-Pillars are too thick! Help in finding a beginner-friendly car with good visibility

It's due to enhanced safety levels that you will see almost all new cars getting thicker & thicker A-Pillars. I would suggest that the same be incorporated into your style of driving because A-Pillars aren't going to get thinner with time.

Your wife can perhaps learn driving on a cheap beater car, but eventually, let her drive the Kiger.

If you absolutely want a 2nd car, I'd suggest getting an EV. Example, the Punch or Tiago EVs. Just wait a little time for Tata to iron out all the niggles though.

Check out used Honda Jazz options with automatic transmission. Think you should find options easily under 10L. I always the huge front glass view a big +point for this car. It's also a car that's easy to drive so should work well for your wife.

I would also suggest to have a look at Honda Brio options but I felt that too small / compact a car. If that's a plus point for your wife, then go for that.

Maruti S-presso AMT can be a good choice if your requirement is mainly city driving. It has very good visibility with higher seating position. I got one last week as a second car because the Hector was big to drive in city traffic. The hector has very good visibility in the front, but I did not find a big difference after driving the S-presso. It is a no frills car, the performance is peppy and gear shifts are not that much jerky. The interiors also don't look cheap and it has reasonable space inside for a sub 7 lakhs car. So far after driving 200kms, the fuel efficiency is also good, getting 20+. You can take a test drive and decide.

Check out the WagonR or Spresso. They have excellent visibility all around and are perfect city (only) cars.

If you can up your budget then Brezza comes with TC transmission and very easy to drive. Other options would be Swift, i10 and Ignis.

In my opinion, one needs to adapt to the fact that cars will have thicker A pillars for safety reasons.

A glued-to-the-seat static positioning while driving isn't advisable, particularly in situations that demand a wider field of view before executing maneuvers such as turns. It's necessary for drivers to sometimes lean forward, and move their heads sideways to get a better look around, and also glance through the right-side window glasses for a comprehensive view. Check if your wife is doing this while driving.

If used is an option do check out the S-Cross. When I drove it the first thing that struck me was how excellent the visibility outside the cabin was.

We picked up a WagonR AMT for my wife last month. We had the same requirements of good visibility and little higher seating. Other 2 cars that too satisfied these criteria were SPresso and Swift. The VXI variant of Swift also comes with driver seat height adjustment.

S-Presso, the perfect choice for ladies, especially with its automatic option. The A pillar isn't bothersome, and it offers a commanding view. I recommend taking it for a test drive; your wife will definitely love it.

I would second the Honda Jazz. The car bas a large windshield which makes the visibility good. The space management by Honda is also top notch. Very roomy and airy car.

I think some variants in the earlier model years (2015-16) did have the magic seats. That would be an added bonus as well.
