If it has to be a diesel, I'd suggest a pre-owned Vitara Brezza VDi in white. Given the number of this "car + variant + color" combination on the road, he'll almost go unnoticed.

There are plenty of next-to-new options in the market and, being a passenger, he won't have to deal with the 1.3's turbo lag either. This is a car, unlike some options shortlisted, that'll serve him well even in his late fifties.

I would suggest one of these:-
1. Jazz
2. Brezza
3. Honda City
4. S-Cross
These cars IMO should not be flashy and would be comfortable for him.

Another suggestion for a nondescript (used) car - Toyota Etios (Liva).

Honda City 4th gen V model. My father got it recently along with another family member and both of them love it. They both did not want to stretch beyond 12 hence ruled out 5th gen. It's a perfect car that gives you almost the best of every world.

A ciaz would fit the bill perfectly or even the previous gen Honda City which is still available for sale as it looks far simpler and not as flashy as the current gen. These would be suitable only if the construction sites have easy access for sedans and lesser potholed routes.

Since most of his clients use B2 segment hatchbacks and sub 4m SUVs, I believe ground clearance would be an issue in those sites for vehicles having lower ramp-over angles (sedans and premium hatches with large overhangs). In that case, a Brezza VXI in white would be the best bet.

Absolutely the best suggestion and the seats are super padded and comfy. And I mention this after 3 years of driving one.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

My top three would be:

- SCross
- Brezza
- Yaris

In that order. But incidentally, none of these cars today come with a diesel engine. And that is an issue when your running is on the higher side of things. Just goes to show how these cars are just about perfect, if not for the one engine option.

If diesel is an absolute necessity, Nexon has very comfortable seats and I found the suspension to iron out an bumpiness on the road surface fairly well. I think it should be inconspicuous too despite the quirkiness in the design. But one very obvious disadvantage would be the lack of a bigger boot.

He should try the Jazz and WRV diesel. Especially the latter is comfortable, spacious, has good FE and base model/pre-owned one would be in his budget.

In comparison, Brezza and Freestyle have got much stiffer suspension, not ideal for someone with bad back.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

The best Value for money and by looking at this requirement is either Freestyle Diesel or XUV300 Diesel. If he is looking only for front seat comfort, then Freestyle is a good choice. But if he is looking for rear seat comfort as well, XUV300 is the best choice. The reason I picked up diesel, because he may need to travel more than 1000 KM in a month. From a long term ownership also, Freestyle is a no brainer, because the maintenance charges are almost half of that of XUV 300 (We have a XUV 300 in our family and we own a Fiesta classic too -- The service bills for a 13 year old Fiesta is cheaper than a 2 year old XUV 300 ). The only downside is the current limbo state of the Ford's future plans for India ..

My choice in this segment would be Aspire (D) that I currently own. But to be honest, it's not one of the most comfortable car out there. Hence, would suggest AMAZE as this car offers ample space, top class comfort. CVT (if he opts for) makes the package even more comfy.

Duster or Brezza/Urban cruiser mid variant. Robust, reliable comfortable and not too flashy either. A used duster can be a good choice if preference is for diesel. Only downside with Duster is maintenance can get expensive once you start munching miles.

The most modest car I could think of is Honda City V MT, 4th gen. Significant value for money at ~10.5 lac OTR. It is a comfortable, reliable and not too flashy car in my opinion.

Two of my friends, one who was looking for a compact SUV and other one who booked a latest i20, both bought this car after my suggestion and cannot thank me enough for this.

Attaching pictures of both the cars

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

Non Flashy with high seating to address back issues - my 3 suggestions:

1) Maruti Ertiga Lxi White - Very understated work horse. Being a contractor he can use the rear cabin for loading stuff when required.

2) Renault Duster RXS 1.5 Petrol White - The only non flashy car from the Renault stable. Very good suspension and long term stability. He won't be bothered with any eventual phase out of the existing Duster either as he wants his ride to stay unnoticed!

3)Mahindra Bolero B4 - Again a rugged tried and tested SUV which will not make heads turn and very unassuming. I will not suggest the Neo also. If he is insisting on a diesel motor this serves his purpose.

Some of the cars suggested like the Renault Triber/Kiger Hyundai Venue Honda City/WRV/Jazz Maruti Brezza - I consider them all flashy cars and not which you will associate with handyman like cars. They are more of family cars.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

1) Brezza Diesel from True Value - a 3 yr/30-35k kms old would be perfect.
2) Mahindra Bolero - simple & a true workhorse.

In Petrol, the below would be apt:
1) New Maruti Wagon R
2) Hyundai Nios

Since seating comfort is important for a person with back pain, it would be better to buy cars which have taller seat to floor height.

Go for Ertiga eyes closed. It's below 12 Lakhs OTR for ZXi+ model which has all needed features and it's very comfortable for front 2 rows. Also you can simply walk-in and seat, perfect for people having back problems. As it's Maruti, other things are already sorted out like reliability, good A.S.S., good FE, etc.
