Which cars are ergonomically comfortable for overweight people?

Hi,

I am a short, very overweight person (5 ft 2 inches, 110kgs. I have trouble finding a comfortable position in my Ford Ecosport, as it feels like I am sitting "on" the seats rather than "into" them. I also have a Tata Nano, and I have to use a seat belt extender to buckle up.
While I acknowledge that being overweight is the real issue to be addressed here, this is an issue which also affects people who have larger frames, who aren't necessarily overweight. So, I searched the forum and didn't find an exact thread on this topic.

The issue is not just about the seats, but also about other factors, such as not hitting your head on the A pillar (common issue for taller people with some cars), or even the door itself (TUV3OO comes to mind).
You can find this information in most of the reviews, but a consolidated thread for it would be nice to have, IMO.
So, which cars, in your opinion, are better suited for larger people?

Cars with wider seats are naturally aimed at suiting even the larger bodied folks. Creta has pretty large seats, so did the Mitsubishi Cedia, Suzuki Kizashi and Nissan Teana. These are just the cars I can think off at the top of my head. Generally speaking I'd say most cars under 15 lacs don't offer much seating comfort to the overweight person.

Hi,

I am of a larger frame that you are and have been like this for more than nine years now.
We have a Tata Vista 2012 model in the family and I can definitely vouch for Tata Cars such as Vista having enough space to accommodate large people such as us and being ergonomic too.

The new generation Tata Cars such as Tiago and Tigor aren't that spacious though. Nexon is very spacious and reflects Tata's philosophy of more car per car. I think that as I usually drive Tata Vista, I have gotten used to the ergonomics offered by the car. Many people may be of different opinion on ergonomics though

We recently bought the New Amaze 2018 and the car is spacious enough for me to fit in. The ergonomics are very different and am still trying to get used to the car.

PS : The Chevy Beat in the pic has been recently sold to make way for the automatic petrol Amaze V CVT. Beat was very small for me and was hence driven only 22000 in 6.5 years.

I think the WagonR probaly has the largest seats in the budget hatch segment. It is also the largest car overall, and the roomiest for taller folks. The seats are very squarish, which suits broad shoulders and wider frames.

My Ecosport came with fabric seats, which were well contoured, but rather small for me.

I didn't like the beige as it clashed with the black dash and floor, and got seat covers. I asked them to add some extra padding. This improved the under-thigh support a bit, but they couldn't do much about the sides as the armrest and lumbar support knob were in the way. But I lost a bit of the contouring in the process.

The Swift has always had the best seats in the segment, and the latest iteration doesn't disappoint.

The Tigor has wide seats, considering it's size, but they're a bit soft.

The Nexon has wider seats than the Ecosport, though they're told to be too soft for long journeys.

The Honda WR-V has much wider and comfier seats than the others in its class, and seem to have matured a lot compared to the Amaze it's based on.

Which cars are most ergonomic for larger/overweight people?

Just thinking aloud, would it not be possible to change to custom made seats rather than change the car? Only if it is 2 airbag variant.

Also I think the Innova seats and the ergonomics it offers is unbeatable.

re: Which cars are ergonomically comfortable for overweight people?

I think the Duster/ Terrano have really wide seats, a few of my friends that do fit your description have sat in my car and said that they were comfortable ( Terrano ) , nor did we brush elbows , so that's a plus.

Having said that , these cars don't have the best ergonomics, but they are pretty wide and should be enough to suit your needs

^ Will differ on Duster/Terrano seats, don't find them either wide or supportive, especially under-thigh support. Ergonomics are ok for the driver.

Tata's have good seats as do Toyotas. XUV has good seats as well.

Generally, the bigger the car, the more comfortable a heavy person would be in it. More cabin width, space & larger seats. Would suggest taking a long test-drive of any car before signing on the dotted line.

The EcoSport's seats are snug - we had mentioned the same in our official review.

Arjun Reddy made a suggestion that I 100% agree with. Now that you bought the EcoSport, go to a good seat shop and get the entire seat redone. It's a very simple exercise (I've done it for my Jeep).

They have cheap seats which lack contouring, hence it's easy for someone who is overweight to sit on them.

Yes, I had gone through the review, but I admit that I was very confused at the time of buying the Ecosport. Other than the seating, there wasnt anything to find fault with.

The covers that I have installed have more padding, which has flattened out the seat a bit. Now it's more comfortable but the lumbar support adjustment has no effect.

I'm considering retrofitting a seat from something bigger, like the Endeavour or the Mondeo, if I can find one. I'm assuming that being Fords, they should fit in with minimal modification..
