Are they still in India and in what condition? The Zagato looks to be a brand new car in the picture posted, a genuine 210 Km/hr car. A real gem and rare even when new they command fantastic prices now.

And just for the record Prince Aly Khan, son of The Aga Khan III died in an accident in France while driving his new Lancia Flaminia Touring.
Both the Lancias are still in India, atleast one is in a bad condition now.

I would love to see pictures and hear more about both

I will have to ask Daddy Since only 4 Chargers are known in India, and only one is an RT, chances are bleak.

IIRC there was an Blue Oldsmobile 442 probably 69-70 Model in Kolkata used to be parked in a building opposite my them home at Middleton street. Used to be driven by Gentleman normally wearing white safari suit and brown shades. It looked huge compared to 8oo's and NE's, this was in 1993-94. Also remember about a yellow Camaro featured in a Farook Sheikh movie"Ab Ayega Maaza" and one for sale in classifieds of Auto India in 96-97.

The kind of car that can make one go weak in the knees! Oh, what I wouldn't give for such an immaculate Classic Benz. When I walked up to her, Janis Joplin automatically started singing in my head.

The Good : Extremely well restored & maintained. This is perhaps one of the best Classic Benz' I have seen in Mumbai. Even the interiors seem to have been painstakingly restored.

The Bad : Parked on a crowded public road with bikes & buses passing just a centimeter away . I wouldn't even park my Jeep in this spot. Ugly body jam stickers

NOTE : Hope this car qualifies as a Classic Sportscar. If not, let me know and I'll move this post to the Mercedes thread.

Well if this car is not a classic sports car then what is? In my opinion it was a classic while still in production in its 280 guise.

It looks like a good restoration but just some very minor points that I have noticed are as follows, and hope someone sheds more light on them.

The rear 230 SL script was always on the left side of the boot. The MERCEDES script seems to be an add on.

The exhaust stainless steel covers seem to be from a later model Mercedes.

The glove box lid never had the 230 SL script on it, a smaller font script was used on cars without radios at the radio cutaway. Also the first time I have seen a black and white combination steering wheel.

Last but not least the add on chrome fender covers seem to be totally out of place in a car that is so naturally elegant and so attractive. ( Not to mention those ghastly stickers, but looks like the advertiser is paying very well !! )

And the whitewalls are too broad!

I wonder if the heavy stickers were kept on the seat first, or the driver is a sumo wrestler?!

Re: Classic sports cars in India (1945 - 1975)

This Mercedes could almost have been invited to the Cartier event in the resurrection class, because this car is a resurrection. With the same family since more than 25 years, she was in difficulty lying in a workshop near french bridge, windshield cracked, dash broken, engine out, rotting away. Later a family member took her case up and started work first at Kasli's, where she was put together and got running, then to Sanghi garage. Under the bonnet she has a wrong engine though.
This is my favourite Merc sports car after the 300SL.

Cheers harit

Re: Classic sports cars in India (1945 - 1975)

1956 Flaminia Zagato?

I thought that the first Zagato's came out in 1960, will someone please add more information. From the pictures I would assume that this particular Zagato is anything from 1960 to maybe 64.

Also another point was that there was no redline or zone on the Flaminia rev counters in all versions, Pinin, Touring and Zagato.( the only other car I know of without a red zone is the Miura, maybe someone can add more )

Twin cam engine ? I dont think the Flaminia engines were over head cams, I knew that they were single cam in vee design engines.

All said the article can do nothing to detract from the elegance and style this car has in bundles.

Hi Alvis,

I totally agree with you on all the errors to the car you pointed out, but the steering combination is original. You see, it is actually a white steering and would have come with a light or deep tan leather surround, but with age, grime, dirt and discolouration the colour turns almost black. The 220S finny that I'm doing has the exact same discolouration over the years.

Nowadays however, since the leather pad and centre star are available without the steering wheel, you can have such a combi if you want to.

Regards
Prithvi

I wouldn't take the article too seriously. Nice set of photographs though - somewhere in Sasoon/Backbay? I'd post them up here, but not sure how to.
