Now you guys have really done it!! I had wanted a Dodge hardtop coupe in 1953 but was drafted into the US Army for two years. This convertible is beyond a doubt the most beautiful, nostalgic car I have seen for decades. Thank you so much for posting it.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Today being Gandhi Jayanti I though I should put up this recently aquired photo of Gandhi being driven in a huge tourer, probably a Cadillac of the 1930's.
The photo of the moving car was taken probably near The Times of India or that school.

Cheers (literally) harit

If you look closely at the radiator surround, it is probably a Buick.

And it wouldn't be the first time he was seen in a similar Buick

Very very nice. Confirmation on the car? The logo on the grille could make it a Star - a racing version of which was recently discussed.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Mandwa, circa 1990

With pail in hand, here I am, ready to get to business. Sister getting in the way, as she often did:

Note that I am standing on the carrier, not the soft metal roof. Quite proud of myself

Giving 'SolaSola' (named after it's 1616 registration number) a good wash (@Harit - can you identify this spot? ):

My uncle, who is quite the car-guy, reminisces about SolaSola via email:
It must be MMD 1616, as that was the only black Amby we ever owned. It was the personal car of the owner of National Garage, and was finished in a beautiful Krylo Metallic brown when we first bought it. A couple years into our ownership the doors rusted through, and I took it to a Gowalia Tank body shop recommended by Firoze Cama for just the tin work. That shop had expertise in all things Amby, including the remarkable ability to transform the old workhorse to look just like a Mercedes 190 Pontoon, by replacing the grill and lights of an Amby with Mercedes parts. The parts swap plus some skillful body work resulted in a surprisingly convincing Mercedes knockoff, and these cars were a great source of pride to some that had the keen desire, but not the means to own the marque.

We would visit the body shop every other day to ensure the work was being done correctly, and that no carpatch filler was used anywhere on the body. Once the body work was complete I drove it, in bare metal to the National Garage paint shop run by Mr. Nair, the leading expert in painting cars at that time. His paint shop was the only one in the State to have a booth to bake on the paint after it was applied. The gloss of the baked enamel paint was amazing; I don't think new cars even come close to the shine on MMD 1616, because today's water based environmentally friendly paints just can’t compete with the toxic cocktail of gloss lacquers used at that time. The Rs. 10,000 paint job was admired by all, but in less than two years, rust reared its ugly head once again. We sold the car to one of Ratan's employees at that time.

The only thing I don't remember is the car having a roof carrier; perhaps we installed it just for the trip. I often think about the car, and hope it escaped being scrapped, and is still in use somewhere.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Hi Rehaan,

1616 was indeed the car used by Mahendra mathurdas, the managing director of national garage who recently passed away.

Your grandfather had earlier bought MRZ 5783 from us.

He and your uncle had come home one Sunday morning to take delivery, sold to your family by us for one thousand rupees..

5783 was a mark 2 bought by us in 1966/ 67 , painted in dove grey with two tone rexine seats , grey and red.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

In the first picture, the registration number has three alphabets ,seems incorrect for 1912??

Lovely pictures , keep them coming
