Karlosdeville,
If the plate was UP 737 LW, I would say it is a normal 1908 series number from United Provinces Lucknow as Travancore says. To be honest we don't have many pictures from UP in the early days and this is the first with UPL rather than UP. I can only presume that when they got to UP 9999 LW, they moved on to UPL. We still have a lot to learn about the early registrations!
However with more wonderful pictures like this we may sort it all out in time.
Cheers
Cedric

A Traction Avant at a Parsee function, almost certainly in Bombay. Do the people look familiar? They're currently unidentified. Don't miss the racing slick tyres.

As for Newbies, we will always be known to be new (and make mistakes) as it states how many posts we have made. Who cares what BHP name we have!

All the best to all and thanks again Tuchha

Cedric,

it could be either JOBAT or JAWRA in central India.I will try to get confirmation soon and revert.

Having observed the rather unfortunate quality of some photographs/screenshots posted elsewhere on the forum I feel these photos qualify equally and should have a place in this thread:

Can anyone identify this couple, its a Mayurbhanj car. Can someone identify what the car is, I think its one of those American contraptions?

Julian, the first picture looks like a 1931 Buick (to me) with a Lalique hood ornament. Photo attached below is a Series 57 (?) source AULT PARK Concours d'Elegance

julian,
Have forwarded the link cars to members of the mayurbhanj family. I regularly use to meet the family while I was at university in Calcutta in the early & mid 80's. Even visited mayurbhanj with them. Heard lots of stories about their cars. the shikar rolls, made to order lalique mascots, at one time they had 12 aeroplanes. Late late mayurbhanj loved his cars, he had a custom bullet proof power wagon too which was at their shillong residence.

The 2nd person in the photograph captioned

is probaly late sirdar singhji of shahpura, Jodhpur lancers, he saw lot of action in WW I, was overseas for 6-7 years during the war. The elderly person in white beard (last phot) is probaly Sirdar Singhji father, Rajadhiraj Nahar singhji, KCIE (born nov 1855, ruler shahpura 1870-1932). Sirdar singh daughter - HH Maharani Prema Kumari Devi, married HH Maharaja Sir pratap chandra bhanjdeo of Mayurbhanj 25th November 1925.

I do have a large framed photograph probably taken at this same wedding.

I do believe that a poor quality shot is better than no shot at all, so they are very welcome.

Can't tell from the radiator but if the Buick has the exposed honeycomb radiator then its a 1929. 1930 onwards saw the louvered shutters in the grill design

Sat, if they would like a copy of the DVD I can send one to you or them or anyone interested.

These are screenshots from a DVD my cousin in Ramchandrapur W B compiled from old film. Here are more including some Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost shots. Not yet identified.
Unfortunately some of the film is reversed, some of the Mayurbhanj shots I have mirror imaged.
Karl here's some more you can id and some number plates. Where was it?

These are all bits of a wedding procession, they are carrying the dowry, is that why there are guards with bayonets fitted?

Julian,

Would like a copy of the DVD, am sure the mayurbhanj family will enjoy watching the dvd too, will pm you the postal address.

I too need to transfer 16mm film footage onto digital format.
Any suggestion where this can be done, Delhi or Mumbai would be ideal..

This is such a good looking Ghost. Is that body design typically Barker?

Lots of coachbuilders built dual cowl tourers
I have managed to convert some of the film to avi from dvd and have uploaded it to utube, see here, 5 1/2 minutes of it. There are some railway scenes in the middle.

I made the "1931" educated guess based on the bumper design. Will have to check what the 1929/30 bumper looked like.

Sat I can't really help with suggestions on transfer, maybe one of the other more contributory forum members can help.
2 copies of the DVD will shortly be on the way to you if you still desire them after having seen it here. (I hope the utube link is working. I don't see any post from anyone who has seen it.... maybe the link doesn't work, though it does for me).

Here is the second half of the film for what its worth...(As I have warned some of the shots in the film are reversed, I have corrected the screenshots. We can't have left hand drive Rolls-Royces can we. Across the atlantic ocean they got up to all sorts of things.
Its also a bit easier to read Mayurbhanj forwards rather than backwards.
I love the gentleman by the Buick, he seems to have a sense of humour!
