Is that a white number plate?

Why this question ?

Harit has stated that it was a Taxi. So logically it should have had white plae with black letters, as with all other commercial vehicles until 1996-97 or so.

Actually IIRC, it was in 2001-02 that the white plates became Yellow and the black ones were converted to white.

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

I don't know if this is the right place, or if these pictures are there in the forum already (Mods, please feel free to deal with this)

Recently I came across a "Coffee Table" book that brought out the 150 years of history of Mumbai nee Bombay Police, published in 2006 called the "Mumbai Police Urbs Prima in Indis " (the latin loosly translates - Mumbai Police the Best in India). A beutiful book with tons of pictorial history of Mumbai and Mumbai Police. There were few pictures which showed the Automobiles of the past used by Police, Goverment and the public.

I hope its not inappropriate to put them here for all to enjoy, as I am told that the book is now out of print.

The scan quality is bad as I had to get it done from a roadside communication centre in remote place in Kerala

All Credits of the pictures to Mumbai Police as publishers of the book "Mumbai Police Urbs Prima in Indis "

Best Regards & Drive/Ride Safe

Re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Wow, This may be one of the best thread in Team-bhp, I spent last two weeks drooling over the cars of the bygone era. I always has a little inclination towards old cars, but never thought vintage cars would be so fascinating. Not to mention the photographs too. Thank you all for sharing such amazing photos and knowledge.

Now, how badly I wish to share a photo from my side.
Unfortunately all I know is my grand uncle had a Chevrolet Fleetmaster which was later exchanged for a Morris Minor. A friend of my grand uncle had a Willy's Jeep which was used for their weekend hunting purposes. The place I am referring to is Jamshedpur and around.I will try for a photograph from the elders in the house but chances are very slim.
Unfortunately, due to sudden death of my grandfather, there were no car in my immediate family, except few early of the series Bajaj Chetak and Super scooters from 70's. One of them got stolen in 2008, rest are still working fine.
It was only in 1990 when my dad bought the 1978/79 Mark IV Ambassador and My uncle, a Premier Padmini from the 80's, I think it is a 1984 model. I am not sure though. The Ambassador is with me and a treat to drive but the Padmini is garaged and in almost non working condition. But these do not count in vintage classic section I guess .

Given the above statement + your Team-BHP ID, i can safely recommend that you spend the next two weeks looking at these threads :

Himalyan Rally Experiences - A Flashback

Flirting with the limits of adhesion - Niaz Ali
On rally.co.in - an absolutely BRILLIANT thread.

In Ram's pictures two pictures are noteworthy, the car with Indira Gandhi is a Chevy now in a collection in Pune. The BEST busses show a TATA bus which was quite rare, Leyland almost had a monopoly.

Hi Sir,

Sorry to attempt an answer in between, but could this be a Ford V8 from 1936? Did a bit of googling, looks like it. The logo as far as i can make out is a V8. Pardon me if i am wrong.

regards,

Srinand.

There used to be a barrier in a form of a PHATAK,(A bamboo stickwith a heavy load at one end) at mahim junction near the church. This barrier was like a entry point to traffic entering main city and was manned by a cop who used to lower it in suspecting car or truck blocking it for checkup. There was a small speedbreaker too at this point, our school bus used to just pass by.I am talking about the year 1962 or so.
