The traffic was so sparse.These pictures are from the late 1970's, if not earlier or later. Looks like it was just yesterday. Today the places will be the same but all kinds of new cars are flooding the same streets.

Star wars was a late 1970's movie, but if I remember correctly it came later to our cinemas because India had stopped import of Hollywood movies (to conserve foreign exchange) and older movies were being recycled. I saw this movie in Sterling Cinema, and had parked my car in the basement as possible at that time.
The Malabar Hill skyline is relatively uncluttered, how nice. But Grand Paradi, Prithvi already existed. My guess is mid 1980's.
The rear of the Singer/Sunbeam whatever would have been photographed outside Bombay Gym, the side behind Fashion Street, near to Sterling Cinema. In the far horizon you can see the Municipal administration annexe building. I have seen this picture before.
The Renault ouside the Fort wall is similar to the one seen in Chor bazar a while ago.
Central Railway celebrated 125 years in 1978, was founded in 1853 as the GIP (Greater Peninsular Railways).

Here is a Landmaster, may have been new at that time, seems heavily loaded, and could this have been in Panjim? I would prefer the car in the background.

Something for our friends in Chennai.
In Madras there used to be a Roxy Cinema, and on the building the name Globe was also put. A very ornate building which I believe no longer exists.
To advertise movies, Roxy had a Ford Model T truck in around 1930 with MC registration. On this truck they carried advertisements for movies being shown, and the movies were from this period.
Later, in 1938 or so they had a Citroen car of about 1927 which was MCP registered and the rear was modified to carry movie advertisement material. Modified in a similar way to temple cars. And so the movies being advertised were again from 1938 or so.
On the vehicles they also mounted some props from the movie.

BTW, Madras also had trams plying near Egmore.

Thanks Harit, very nice photographs. Roxy theatre was in Pursavakam & is now a shopping mall. The Globe used to be on Mount Road, now a office complex, so a bit confused why Globe is mentioned alongside Roxy !. The Citroen is very interesting.

As you can see, the building has Globe named as part of the masonery, and 'Roxy Talkies' seems to be a board put up. But both are in the picture.

Here is the tram, travelling to Egmore. And there is Castrol prominently advertised, and movies too.

Yep it seems to be an Austin A40 Devon.
twas the favourite of Bombay cabbies in the pre-Fiat days. I remember reading in an article in Autocar India that its hydraulic clutch resulted in high maintenance cost for cabbies, so they took the Fiats' mechanical clutch..?

I've been in touch with a Dr. Avinash Gujarati from Shirdi, who sent me this nice pic. of a mk1 Herald that his father had owned for a few years from around 1966-71. I'm told the car was a '63-64 model, bought from an Army Officer in Pune but had a Madras regn. MSS 161. And it had the same regn. even when they sold it on.
This pic. was taken around 1967 near Ajanta/Ellora where they'd made a trip in the car. They'd been to a lot of places in India in this car, including Kashmir! He says it was even fitted with a roof carrier at one point (common for cars back then)
The flat chrome add-on bumpers seem to have been a common accessory for Heralds in Pune/Bombay.
He mentioned that the car was sold on because firstly that was the time when the 4-door Herald came out and the older 2-doorers were said to go down in value, plus their hired driver (seen in the pic.) had also become too old to drive then.

Wow, 4 adults and 2 children crammed into that car, and there would not have been an AC fitted.

Here the lady is learning to cycle, there is a Fiat/Premier in the background. They are actually using a ladies cycle.

And yes, even I was astounded when he told me how they all could sit 'comfortably' in the car!

Not to mention the fact that the rear window glasses couldnt be rolled down!

Here's the same car when it was originally Black (not sure if that's the original paint here though), said to be taken in 1969 at Kota, Rajasthan. That's my friend's father with the long sideburns in the driver's seat. 'not sure who the kid was. The car seems to have had the original side-trims intact then. The later 1100 wheel rim is still fitted on the same side!



And this pic. was taken probably around early 1940s, that's his grandfather in the white shirt, who was in the UK at the time. Anyone could identify the bus?



And finally, this is one of his grandfather's brothers with his Standard Vanguard ph 1 taken at Secunderabad, maybe in the 1970s/80s. I was told his other brother who lived in the same colony also had a Vanguard (different model though) as well as an Austin, which unfortunately ended up being sold for scrap.
