re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

This could be another scene from the Central Govt. employees strike of 1960.
This picture should have been taken in Mumbai, far away appears to be a double decker tram.
Does anyone have an idea where and what was/is The Central Agency Ltd? Googlebaba does not throw this up.

Cheers harit

The back of this picture says "St. Mary's School", but does not name the place. Any idea if this is the Mumbai one?

Hi, this MRG seems to be original bombay car, and period should be 1972.
In those days having those SS raised number plates was a fad. My dad had a Mark2 1965 with regd no.MRZ 3129. we sold that car ii 1983. My elder brother married in 1977 and the bride came to our home in this 3129,I gotmarried in 1980 and my wife came to our home in this 3129.I still repent selling that beauty...
We had brought that Amby brand new from National Garage for 18000/- used for 18 yrs sold for 18200/-..

Not sure if this pic belongs here. Had clicked it off at a heritage hotel where we had stayed over in Udaipur. The hosts (read manager) mentioned that this was one of the cars of the royal household and had banged into an elephant.

One of the first accidents in Udaipur.

Lovely picture, the elephant must have been a soft one as damage appears to be minimal, the wooden spokes of the wheels are broken and headlights seem to be scewed. This car would probably be an American.

Here a Chevy truck met with an accident, this could have beem done by an elephant

Pic in post#2087 is of the chapel, St. Mary's High School,Byculla, Mumbai. To the left of the chapel, not visible in pic, is the bridge that links Mohammedali Raod to Mazagaon.

There is actually a 1930's documentary on the web of an accident in Jaipur / Jodhpur between a car and a bullock or camel cart. Will find and post it.

There is also a R-R PII (Chassis 63-GN original owner Reginald Beaumont-Thomas) that came to India, got sat on by an elephant and had to go back to U.K. for repairs. Last recorded owner was Mrs. Desaray in Mysore, 1953. This info I believe came from the book R-R 40/50 Ghosts, Sceptres & Phantoms - so likely to be true!

An early 50s Hillman Minx that was owned by the late playback singer Talat Mahmood. As per the info. in the site, Dev Anand too owned one!

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Jesse Owens visited India in 1955. This picture got from a site, there is a Landmaster, Jeep and Ford Custom.
BTW, Wikipedia is really shut at the moment. Oh, those Congressmen (American)
Note the registration number on the Jeep, it apeears to be a normal civilian plate with CD added. Does anyone know when separate diplomat plates in blue were introduced in India?

Cheers harit

travancore posted a picture of an Imperial in the Indian Presidentials cars thread. That car has CD plates, and occasion was the visit of Jackie Kennedy which was in 1962. So CD plated were introduced in or before 1962. About this time, maybe a few years earlier, it became compulsory for diplomatic cars to be sold to STC.

But can you make out where this picture was taken? The building in the background may provide a clue.

You are correct, but you're also 2.5 years too late
I think the answer has been discussed a few posts after the picture.

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Anyone remembers Y.B.Chavan? Here he is with a Dodge/Plymouth 1957 in the background. Picture would be late 1950's to early 1960's. Anyone recognises these people?
When this picture was taken, he was working for the creation of Maharashtra state, or he was the first chief minister of Maharashtra, or he was the defence minister. All this was between 1957 to 1966.
