re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

On 8th march 1956, Ephraim declared his love for Ruby. I got two photos of him sitting on his bike. Behind one photo he mentions that he wished that she was sitting behind him. On the back of the other photo he mentions that his birthstone is Opal, so going after Ruby was a mystery to him. What happened finally is unknown, today messages are spread electronically with mails, sms, mms and what not, in 1956 it was simply a note on the back of the photo.
Today's messages can be deleted, or forwarded to ridicule, in the old days Ruby could only have torn up the photo with the note or burnt it. Since she did neither, maybe things worked out.

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Today all over India, and parts of the world, the Indian tricolour will be waved and cheered, encouraging the team to win the world cup.
This is an old picture of the Indian tricolour put up across Metro Cinema.

Observations:
Buick Super and Riley
1st and 2nd floor windows show MGM, 3rd floor of 20th Century Fox.
Jhaveri Brothers novelty store and Alfa sports are well known shops.
The movie Nancy goes to Rio is being shown. When googled, this movie is of 1950. That would fit with the age of the cars. In 1950 India became a republic, maybe the flag was put up for that.

Cheers for Team India

Beautiful photo, Harit ! Is the first car an Austin Eight or Ten ?

Notice, how the Jhaveri Bros board is unchanged even today !! Some institutions just mellow like wine. Reminds me of another such board - "YAK'S" tailors at Cecil junction, on Hughes road - unchanged for 50-60 years ??

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

This is for our friends in Chennai.
Does anyone know who was Sheth Gulabhdas Narayandas who lived in a Bungalow called Natavar Nivas at Chetpet? How has this area developed?
The car is likely a Fiat of around 1926, and the registration is MC 86.
This is a page torn from a magazine and sold as automobilia, posted here because it is a car picture. It must have been a Gujrati magazine. I have one more page for later.
If someone could translate the print on the upper right side, it will be nice.

Cheers harit

Wow never seen these kind of pictures before. Giving me the goosebumps. It seems everything was all royal back then.

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

How I wish the Camera was focussed a bit more on this lovely Packard.
I have still no answer who this Parsi gent was, have a whole lot of his pictures with a huge variety of cars and bikes spanning from late 1920's to 1950. I had put up pictures with him in the past.

Cheers harit

Hope this suffices.

The car is a 34 Packard, like the Goenka car. Possibly he's from the Dadajee Dhackjee family?

Hi! Would you guess this to be a Super 8 or just an 8?
I doubt that he is from the Dadajee Dhackjee family, because he owned bikes and simpler cars like Morris of 1948, Fiat Ballila etc.
Hope someone comes up with some identification.

Cheers harit

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

I have always wondered whether any half-track ehicles were ever seen in India, we know that they were there in the north-west frontier provinces, but in India?
Apparently they were here also. This is one photo of 6, it is a Citroen, apparently belonged to Royalty. I got them as glass negatives, had to carefully handled and printed as glass can break, and the negatives can get scratched. No number plate is visible.
In one photo this Citroen is stuck, and labour is clearing a path. In this picture it is standing on an embankment, in another it is in sand.
Does anyone know more about halftracks in India?
Nice reflection, if only waters were more still.

Cheers harit

Its a long shot Harit, and I can't be sure from this angle in the picture, but judging by the distance of the sidemount to the door handle this looks like a Super 8 with the much longer bonnet.

re: Nostalgic automotive pictures including our family's cars

Here a procession in progress. We seem to have had a lot of these in our past. The first truck on the right (or last) there is a lettering on the side saying Golden Era, Vanaspatti? The last word is not clear.
Can any Parsi identify the fire tempel? It may be near to Pricess street, but the traffic is moving in the wrong direction. looks like the trams were shut on that day.

Cheers harit

What car is that black one? Looks like an early 50s Wolseley 6/80? going by the M.Minor shape and the long bonnet.
