"A Rendezvous with Royalty"

I love vintage cars more than my wife,” jokes K Subramani, the manager director of United International Exports and Imports, who has been collecting them for several years now.

The first car in his collection was the 1947 Chevrolet Fleetmaster. “It belonged to the Royal Family of Mysuru. It’s a big sedan with six cylinders and has a place for the Maharaja to sit at the back,” he says. The burgundy maroon vehicle is sure a beauty and gets everyone’s attention when it’s out on the road. The story began when Subramani had gone to Mysuru with a friend in the 1980s and came across the vehicle. “My friend was close to the family and when I got it, I drove it to Bengaluru,” he recalls with nostalgia.

The car was custom-made by the Americans for the Maharaja with a special right-hand drive just like all Indian cars. It is still in perfect condition and Subramani drives it regularly even today. “In 1993, I drove it to Hyderabad and back and took part in a rally there. Around 84 vehicles had participated in the rally and Rosaiah was the Chief Minister. In his presence, they suddenly declared my car as the winner. It also won prize for being the ‘Best American Car’.”

The car even went on a flatbed truck in 1997 to Dharmasthala and received great reception. “When Veerendra Heggade, the ‘Dharmadhikari’ of Dharmasthala Temple, saw it, he asked me if there was anything that he could do for me. I said I just wanted to click a photograph of it in front of the temple and got my wish,” he (continued)

"Roving on glorious wheels"
Surupasree Sarmmah, Aug 04, 2015, DHNS

Omar Kaiser jokes that had he not been married, he would have been in the Andamans now with his prized possessions — three classic Land Rovers. Hailing from Bengaluru, Omar runs an adventure tourism company, owns lounges and recently started a garden store in the City. “My plan is to go back to adventure tourism where these vehicles play an important role. It was with this intention that I started collecting these Land Rovers. These vehicles have a rich history due to their capability and reliability. More than speed, it’s the capability of the vehicle that is important and the Land Rovers are the best when it comes to being reliable even in the most difficult conditions,” he says.

There is a factual error there.in 1993 the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh was K Vijayabhaskara Reddy and not K.Rosaiah who became CM much later in 2009 succeeding YSR

"The old-world charm"
Nina C George, Aug 11, 2015, DHNS

Extracts:

DRS Prabhu says:

Among the collection is the Ford A, a 1930 model that was previously owned by a European family that lived in Whitefield. “The family sold it to me as scrap. I paid Rs 25,000, which was later given to charity. It took me 11 years to find the spare parts and bring the car to a running condition,” he explains. He spends a lot of time studying the structure of the car and understanding its working condition. “Even if one of the bolts is lost, I know exactly which one and how to replace it,” he adds.

Then there is the maroon 1946 Chevrolet Fleetmaster, which he bought from Mysuru. “This car was literally abandoned. I happened to visit the house of the previous owners and fell in love with the car and didn’t think twice before buying it.”

He also has a ‘Studebaker Champion’, which is a 1955 model previously owned by Tamil film star MG Ramachandran’s (MGR) brother Chakrapani. “When MGR was shot at during the making of one of his films, he was rushed to the hospital in this car. He has also driven this a couple of times,” he says.

Dear Vinay,
It is with utter horror & disguest, that I read about the 1947 Chevrolet Fleetmaster 1947. This car was actually bought brand new by my late grandfather Mr. Mannaji Rao & was always been in the family un till my uncle Ananda Rao sold it to Mr. Subramani. The car was among the first batches of Fleetmasters built in Bombay for the Indian market.
Mr Subramani has intentionally given a false history of the car being a former Mysore Palace car just to gain some cheap publicity. I have immediately written a clarification letter to Deccan Herald, which I can forward to you. This " gentleman " CANNOT produce a single document to prove his claim. Many senior members of Karnataka Vintage & Classic Car Club ( KVCC ) know the real history of the car. How low can Mr. Subramani (who is the Treasurer of KVCC ) stoop to , just to get some credibility.
We , as family members still have lots of photos, documents to prove the real ownership.
Regards
Ajay Kadam

Dear Ajay99,
I totally agree with you. This entire article is FACTUALLY INCORRECT ON ALL COUNTS. This so called " Collector " has intentionally projected his collection with shear rubbish. Sad .

Thanks Ajay for coming out. Your family is amongst the most respected families in Bangalore and that article did do grave injustice to history. The Late Ganesh Rao, to this day, is very fondly revered by my father. The way the cars were maintained by Sajjan Rao family are legendary stories of the lore.

Cheers

Re: Media Matter Related to Vintage and Classic Cars

Subbaiah
Dont know if you got my reply to your post.
Any way , we members of the Sajjan Rao family definitely come from a different class from the present owner of the the Chevy. Old timers at KVCC really know all the history of the motorcycles & cars owned by the Sajjan Rao family. A lot of us were upset upon reading the article. It just goes to shoe the extremely low character of the the present owner & his lust for self glorification.
If one goes through the article carefully, one can see it is FULL of LIES. I will definitely take up this matter further.
Cheers
Ajay

The Sunbeam is an ex-Travancore (Regent Maharani) car!

Re: Media Matter Related to Vintage and Classic Cars

Absolutely agree with Ajay - we are 1st cousins and everyone in our family fondly remember these vehicles. Regarding the article, it is full of errors...here is another one:

The purple blue Mercedes Benz Classic Armoured vehicle is another gorgeous possession of his, which he got in 1991. In the heavy traffic of the City, it’s like a jolt of refreshing blue streaking through. “The car is a 1994 make with 12 cylinders and people stare at it whenever I drive it,” beams Subramani.

Indeed a very despicable thing to do! And trust the media to gobble up any piece of lie that sounds sensational to them! That the car sports an original BANGALORE (MYB) regn. itself belies its "history" as an ex-Mysore car!

To point out- the women did not participate in a 'vintage' car rally but one with normal 'modern' cars that day. These vintage cars (all from only one collection) were only put on display there.
