Re: Media Matter Related to Vintage and Classic Cars

An article from Society magazine of July 1996. It gives quite a good account of the then prevailing situation.A lakh or even a few lakhs would fetch a beauty then.

Loved the punchline on the last page "don't ask a woman's age, a man's wage and cost of a vintage (car)."

"There should be no communication between the stable and the motor house ." The analogy is quite succinct and lucid. It is evident that the writer of this manual draws this conclusion from the adjacent locations of the car garage and the horse stable, in the bungalows of yesteryear's.
This is because the potential Rolls Royce owner's (rather most car owners) then in 1922, were gradually graduating from horse drawn carriages to cars.

Here is more media matter for Volkswagen Beetle fans. There was one club in Bombay 20 years ago and this article gives an insight into its activities:

Raja Dhody tracks man who stole 2 vintage cars after five-year search

Entrepreneur Raja Dhody, who lost two of his prized vintage cars to a conman five years ago and has been trying to get them back ever since, has filed a police complaint against the man who took the cars away promising to restore them. Dhody acquired a red Model-T Ford and a green Austin, both models from the 1920s and which he claims are worth at least Rs 50 lakh each, in an auction 20 years ago.

The conman has devised a new way to swindle vintage car owners. All is OK in the news item, except for the fact that the cars are quoted to cost Rs 50 L each today.

Interesting, I think Mr. Prashant is known to a few t-bhpians

Some more news apart from the 50L is not OK. I believe that the car involved would be a Model A, not a "T". And the picture shown is a Morris, not an Austin. Both cars are not really worth the effort of any wrong doing, wonder whats behind all this.

Cheers harit

Re: Media Matter Related to Vintage and Classic Cars

Maybe, just maybe, its a printing mistake? The value would be Rs 50,000/ at most. But that is not the point. The cars being stolen, or so the article states, is what should be an eye opener for one and all. Dont hand over your car to just anyone who claims to be a restorer. I wonder how many of us remember the con man Jitu?? And a certain irani??

I bought this book from infibeam.com for about INR 1579 including shipping.

Altough I do not qualify to comment, but still my comments on what I felt of this book -

Con's -

1.)This book does not have any theme or subject. I talks about bikes and then about the Ferrari and the about the SB1100 (aka modified Premier Padmani) by our very own Bijoy Kumar Y former editor of BSM.

2.) A big book of A3 proportions (just like his magazine, why he likes this size I do not know) (May be they run news papers too and that's the common size for them) very tedious to handle.

3.) After you have read or glance completly, you feel only this much.

Pro's -

1.) A very good book, I think any auto enthusisat should get one.

2.) At 1580 is a VFM book. This book has got many pictures and equally good write up too (tough I am yet to read with attention).

3.) You will be surprised to see some of the unseen aspects / possible ventures / prototypes of / for Indian Automotive scene.

4.) But as I said earlier it has got no theme so don't expect that Sanjay Gandhi's Maruti and The Sipani Badal or for that matter the Bajaj PTV or HAL car is talked about.

5.) But what you get in retun is detailed pictures, never seen befole black and white + color images. Some detailed engineering skeches and stuff.

In an all a very nice read. A must buy for the lovers.

Appeal to the Author -

Please Please release a version (or maybe 2 or 3 volumes) with Indian Automotive history (Start to end). In your book you also have international subjects, which is good but an Indian History specific book will be awesome and definitive.

Re: Media Matter Related to Vintage and Classic Cars

This is a page from The Indian Auto Journal January 1989. It appears that Gautam Sen went along in Mallyas Mayurbanj Rolls. The event happened in December 1988. So one can deduce that VCCCI was founded about 1985, that fits to my memory. I don't think that their website states anything about when it was founded, or who were the founding members.
Indrol was originally Castrol who sponsored a lot of vintage and racing activity since the 1950's or longer. The renaming happened because of politics, Castrol was forced to dilute their stake and so did not wish to give their name, similar reason why Phillips was PEICO for a while.
