Today I went to autokraft to pickup my car. Like everytime I have been strolling near the sheds to find number of marques (both imports and domestic cars) of yesteryears dying a rusty death.

I clicked the this pic a of a Standard 2000 - one of my most favorite Indian cars ever:

Autokraft is Maruti Authorised service station.
Interkraft is obviously Merc & and other high end brands including imports.
Carkraft is Tata cars.

All three workshops are within the same compound and share infrastructure like paint booths, body shops, sheds, etc.

PS: That golden alto in the background is my car.

You will laugh when you hear this. It was sold in India with the old outdated and underpowered engine that came on the Standard Vanguards of the old days.

Such a striking looking car deserved to be sold with the V8 as it was designed for instead it got that old motor and it ultimately resulted in the company folding. No diesels were officially sold but later a lot of these cars were converted privately to Diesel.

Not to mention a locally assembled gearbox that was known to emit sounds similar to those in a horror movie!

But, more than the company, we'd have to blame the then government policies and restrictions prevalent then for the way the car turned out mechanically!

Stanher we owned the car from 85 to 88 and never heard the noises you mentioned! The only issue was that the reverse gear engagement took some uniques moves like the ones needed with german manuuals (merc/bm/Tata estate/old Safari/seirra) not sure what you are talking about as I did not hear about this from any of the several dozen owners I interacted with then. The major issue was with the Standard Vangaurd engine which lacked torque to really move the deadweight of the car. even with 2 SU solex england carbs all she could show far was some mid range grunt and the rest was sad I loved her though as nothing else baring some used imports were available as options.
