It was there at the statesman but the car was sounding lousy and was smoking away to glory.

Hi,

These are Mr. Salloo Choudhury's cars. There are many more cars in this same compound. I remember seeing these last year when me and MBZ180 had gone their together. There is a very nice Chevy Impala Convertible that is in immaculate condition. His collection includes a La Salle, Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane (convertible), MG that has been modified and made a boat tail, 2-3 Mercedes Benz W115, 2-3 Standards, Morris minors and lots more. I am not sure he would be happy to have photographs of his cars on the internet. I hope you have taken permission from him before you posted pictures of his cars.

That's a very wrong thing you did. Please be careful about these things in the future.

Re: KOLKATA - Cars waiting to be Restored or Scrapped!

Here's an Amby being tuned up in front of our flat.
Not sure of the year, any comments?
With most of the Padmini's off the road and virtually no Fiats around, these old Ambassadors are beginning to look better each day!

this is a 1st generation amby (1958-1962) with numerous modifications including later taillights, bumpers, hidden fuel cap, indicator stalk, instrument cluster, switches. the engine has been probably changed as well.

Re: KOLKATA - Cars waiting to be Restored or Scrapped!

Saw the car west of Landsdown about 10 blocks north of Hazra.
Couldn't get any information about the car. Any idea about the year?

Re: KOLKATA - Cars waiting to be Restored or Scrapped!

I was doing a 'walk about" on some of the back streets around our south Kolkata flat and saw this very nice late 50's /early 60's Austin. Can anyone put a date on it/

Hi John,

Its actually a late 40s/early 50s Austin A40 Devon.

Looks restorable, hope it finds a good home. Speaking of which, does it belong to that spooky house in the background?

There is a similar looking old house in Bangalore with a Hillman Minx, both rotting and sadly vandalised over the years!

Many such old cars Austin 8, 10, A40 Devon, Somerset, Morris 8, Minor, older Fiats, Hindustan 10,14, Landmaster, older Ambassadors and even Standard Super 10's, 10's (rarely Heralds, as these were not so popular in Calcutta) and many other makes, would be sighted till the 1980's, during the Durga Puja festival. This is when all members of the family would move out on long drives to see the several Goddess Durga idols within Calcutta.
