Early registration numbers in India-ooty-1930s.jpg

Cross posting. Since the photo was taken in Coonoor, I assume "MN" is for Madras Nilgiris.

Early registration numbers in India-dinajpur-rr-pi-41nc.jpg

Cross-posting the ex-Dinajpur RR PI, Chassis 41NC, so someone can help identify the registration.

Likely to be East Pakistan (Bangladesh) in the mid 1960's.

Travancore,
EBY is the 1947-71 series for Dinajpur in East Bengal.

Here is a Packard bearing " EBH 707 or EPH 707", the picture if from 1953, and is from Haridwar.

Interesting! I cannot find EPa on any of my lists and if it is EBH, that is a very long way away from E. Bengal Khulna. Since the photo is 1953 I would have expected any EB series in India to all have been reregistered long before then.
There are almost no British Indian series that start with an E.
The Jeep has a very strange registration also and the Packard registration is written strangely E PH 707. Blowing it up only makes things worse as it then looks like 2 PH 707 and that makes no sense.
Do you remember what the occasion was?
Cheers

The Jeep's registration seems to be HIM-82 (Himachal Pradesh was called the Chief Commisioners province of Himachal Pradesh since 1948, it looks like full Statehood only came in 1971).

Keonthal was a smaller princely state - they took the liberty of inserting the State's name in the middle of the official registration!

Sorry, pictures are a but hazy.

Thanks to DKG's excellent initiative on facebook and of course to travancore, we can now identify that that 2143 is the Bentley B91DK, now in the Bhogilal collection, and 2146 is the Hudson of the same owner, Chenai/Chenoy. The world just gets smaller and smaller.

An Assamese registration, A2699L on a Vauxhall. The back of the photo identifies the location as Assam.
It's a cross posting.

Wasn't PP's Vauxhall also a similar car originally an Assam registration? I think he had also painted it White! Wonder if he still has it?

Re: Early registration numbers in India

This afternoon, I spotted an auto-rickshaw with a KLC registration plate in Kannur. It was standing on one of the auto lines near the municipal bus stand. It is very much doing its duties and has appeared to be in a fine state. The auto has a Tellicherry body.

I asked the driver about the year of its registration/purchase, thinking that he would tell me as he himself was quite a senior person. But he was indifferent, and told me he would have to look at the papers etc, for which he anyway showed no enthusiasm :(

He did not reciprocate my excitement and refused permission to click a single photo of the auto. I felt that he became suspicious of my intentions and that he would be put to trouble.

I am sure that the auto is more than forty years old and perhaps older than me.

The other day I also spotted a Hindustan Motors trekker in perfect condition in the neighboring town; a trekker which dates back to 1985 or so, and it carries a KRC registration plate. Since it was passing on the main road, there was no question of me approaching the crew.

I remember travelling in these trekkers many a time in the 80s.

They are no longer in production and I do not know how they manage renewal of registration more than twice.
