Recently link was put up bu Moralfiber, and then Karl posted the picture.
What were the series BHx? May have been Bihar though I have not seen and noted BHx registrations before.

Cheers harit

Yes, probably Bihar indeed. I have BHA, BHB, BHW and I assume this is BHT. Another uncommon (for us) series from there is BPx. I have BPS and BPT.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

The BR __ series is older to the BH __ series.BR was quite common in the earlier days, whereas BH had perhaps commenced later on.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Gents,
I have that BH and BR were the first series, then BE and BP and finally BI, all being Behar. Some may have been Patna only with others the rest of Bihar.
Cheers

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Harit,
Lovely photo of the UP car. UP is United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. It existed until 1935. Usually the UP registrations were in the form of UP nnnn and two letters to indicate the town but I guess there were not many people bothered if it was backwards in the 20s and 30s.
SR was Saharanpur.

Keeping digging for photos:-)
Cheers

Re: Early registration numbers in India

I came across this picture in an older publication. It said that this was one of the oldest cars in Lucknow belonging to a Dr. Tandon. Registration appears to be LW3.
The car could be an early Fiat or Lancia, nice car.

Cheers harit

Re: Early registration numbers in India

Another early registration, a temporary number on a brand new Ford of the late 1930's, just came home to a Parsi family.

Re: Early registration numbers in India

At the recent Pebble Beach concours the Holkar Delage sported replicas of what was probably the original number assigned to the car when in Holkar State. The plates look super, ignore the crest on the front plate, I think that is to do with the present owner.

Harit,
Lovely photo of the 1930s Ford.
From what I have seen there are no temporary registrations before 1947, just dealer (or trade plates as they are often called). There are very few photos but most have a letter or letters then a number and a serial letter. I believe that, as per the current system, the serial letter after the number was the individual plate for that dealer.
In the 1920s in the UK, dealer plates were called General Identification Marks and I think I can see GEN before the number on the Ford but am not 100% certain. Maybe the Indian system called these plates the same as the UK did?????
It doesn't help tie down where the photo was taken and I guess, if it is CEN not GEN, it could be Central Provinces, again maybe.
Not much help I know but each photo adds a bit to the history!
Cheers
