Jeep Willys

Aadix, I will need your help in getting one from Hyderabad. I have seen quite a few well maintained ones in Hyd. How much do you think they'll cost now? A Ford or a Willy will do... but Left Hand Drive is a must for me.

Another interesting fact:
When the Proof of Concept World War II jeeps were tested, it was found that they were overweight by around 150 kilos when compared to the requirement. Then engineers then used shorter length bolts wherever they could and used just one coat of paint instead of three....... and the jeep passed the test by a few ounces.

I have a few photos of a Ford Jeep from Hyderabad.... shall post them shortly.

The World War II Willys MB, was even used as a small railway locomotive, when required. It could haul a 9-ton load in this role. Talk about the advantages of lower rolling resistance of steel wheels on steel rails. Of course, they must have engaged four-wheel-drive for best traction.

Needless to say, much more modification would be needed for
India's broad gauge [5 ft 6 in (1676 mm)].
The Willys MB Jeep's standard track was only 4 ft 0 in (1230 mm).

The original four wheels with stock 6.00x16 Non-Directional Mud & Snow (NDMS) tires
are mounted around the rear tub for speedy conversion for road use.

Pictures were taken by a visitor to the the U.S.Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

saw this lady driven jeep.the color was greyish would have looked better if it was dark green.still looked good and well maintained.

This looks like a tired Willys CJ-3B with extra fittings.
It has a snorkel for wading through water, blackout light, pickaxe blade, headlamp guards and Maruti Gypsy wheels.

Hey, herez a 60s LHD I came across at hyd...jus been brought for resto....its got this unusual air-intake on the bonnet altho didnt get to take a peek under the hood.....I donno if its original or custom-made but I bet it'd look really cool once the tinkering & paintwork's done up!

Was going to answer u but jus noticed tat ex670c already did- yes its an Austin Champ.....and yes its totally waterproof- completely sealed engine!
Had seen the same 'jeep' at the 15th aug. 2005 rally...altho unftly didnt take many/detailed pics....!

This is a 1949-1952 Willys CJ-3A, judging from the one-piece windshield and three stamped vents of which only the centre one was openable (hinged at the top).

The hoodscoop is a non-original fabricated piece of scrap.

Wonder how the grille got damaged to miss a vertical slat (fourth one)
The Jeep is a pretty rough rust-bucket. You can find better examples of the same age in Bhopal, MP.

I would bet more on the other 1949-1952 Willys CJ-3A which seems to have been freshly painted, although its difficult to comment from a distance.

These two would have had the Willys 60 bhp Go-Devil flathead engine, the precursor to the 75 bhp F-head Hurricane of the Willys CJ-3B.

Many tks for ur input Ram....well I thot it was a 60s one as the regn. no. (blanked out here) was a 60s one.....also didnt pre 60s willys's hav smaller headlights & 'low' bonnet?? This was formerly a govt. vehicle, & looks like it'd been laid up for a long time b4 being auctioned so I guess the grille slat wud've been half corroded & jus snapped off by sumone at the time?

Hi all, I have just picked up a willys 1961 jeep today, for Rs 75000, wanna know how good a deal it was, also lots of info about willys jeeps, i am new to this adventure.
Its got the following :
International diesel engine
good short chasis and body
decent suspension
stock seats
2 wheel drive
the body has willys embossed all over it
got good pick up for a jeep
Brand new normal tyres
